this is my 51st post for this month. and it is dedicated to the 51 medals that china won in the beijing olympics. and so, this will be my last post for this month too.
nothing reminds me more of florida than hurricanes. and at this time every year, whenever i hear news of hurricanes, i would recall my really scary yet very interesting hurricane experiences in 2004. experiences that brought be running off to miami, to new york, to key west, and for one of them, to hide in my room... i survived them all... for me, it was not the running away that was tired. rather, it was the constant worry and fear that was most tiring.
this year, fay was the first that made me sit up. it came and went. and now we have gustav... while gustav reminded me of the strength and the horrors hurricanes could bring, it was fay that reminded me of my experiences most. the path of hurricane fay, with the high probability of hitting naples, was rather similar to that frances (if i recall correctly) took. it was projected to hit tampa where i stayed, but in the end, made an acute turn and slammed into punta gorda instead. it was sad. sad that it slammed into an area that had many old retired people. i had taken refuge in miami hollywood and took hw 75 back via naples. and what i saw on my way home was very sad. charley had totally devastated the areas around punta gorda. even huge highway signs (much larger that those we have at our expressways) were ripped apart. rooftops too were ripped off. it look almost like a scene from a hollywood movie, except that it was real.
these experiences made me appreciate our singapore weather. weird. erratic. but not extreme.
