in my 10 years living in my current place, i have had my fair share of very nice and very ugly neighbours. i was lucky in that the immediate neighbour had been most kind and easy going people. i have also seen their kids, benedict and his brother, daryl, grown... from little babies to big boys now. and very naturally, i have come to accept them as part of my immediate community. last week, while i was at the lift landing, betty, the mother, asked benedict, to tell me what he had told her. benedict was too shy. and betty told me that he wanted to ask if i could get ndp tickets for him. i told him that this was beyond me and that ndp tickets was based on balloting and that i myself was not able to get what i wanted. he took it in good spirit and closed his house door. but i could sense his disappointment. it saddens me.
guess i was lucky. yesterday, a colleague came to my office and ask if i wanted his tickets. he had 2. i nodded and he gave it to me on condition that i collect the goodie bags for him. i agreed. including my single ticket, i now have 3. for a short time on my drive home, i asked if i should give the tickets to my nieces. but in the end, i decided to give to betty and her 2 sons.
i came home, waited for betty and benedict to return. and when i passed the 3 tickets to them, i could see the excitement on their faces. not just benedict who was grinning widely, but betty herself was excited too. she said she had never attended a parade and that she had thought she would never have the chance ever to do so. i could see the excitement and the thrills on their faces.
as i drove out of my estate to pick bee bee from school, i thought about what i did and their happy and excited faces flashed by. and somehow, i experienced a sense of happiness. a feeling that is rather indescribable. and to me, this feeling surpassed any feeling of pride or happiness that i got from any ndp parades that i ever attended. and for that moment, i really really appreciate the phrase that in giving, you are receiving.
