i started my formal education in 1971 in a pap (people's action party) kindergarten in circuit road. becos pap kindergarten were so common and widespread at that time, the acronym `pap' became associated with kindergarten. so it was common then (less so these days) for people to ask "did you attend pap?" or for my parents to say that they "send me to pap at circuit road".
i was one of those very lucky kid to be able to attend 2 years of kindergarten education. my school was located at a void deck in circuit road and it was an half an hour walk from my kampong. daily, my mum would walk me to school and fetch me again after school. whenever she cannot make it, she would ask chew sim to fetch me instead. i always enjoyed walking home with chew sim because she would tell me stories as we walked. i remembered once when she would explain to me about shadows using her shadow that was casted onto the ground by the hot afternoon sun. frequently she would also piggyback me home whenever i get tired walking :-)
once, my mum overslept and forgot to ask chew sim to pick me and i ended up being left alone in school. in the end, i walked home myself and that incident was somewhat blown out of proportion when i got home! anyway, i remembered everyone was saying how clever i was, a 5yr-old and i already knew how to navigate home alone through the concrete jungle and semi-forested areas (it's a weird feeling for while i was writing this, i could almost smell my kindergarten classroom again!).
