we have decided that we shall move dad home soonest possible and not go to the nursing home. over the last week, we met up with the agent and she went through all the nitty gritty details about employing a domestic helper. out of the whole conversation that evening, we finally came to the agreement that i cannot be the employer and that my brother would have to take up that responsibility. my brother resisted rather strongly about him being used as the employer. eventually when pressed for answers given that legally, based on manpower ministry's guidelines, that i cannot be the employer, a lot of things was revealed.
it was somewhat of a shock to me. from what he said, i was able to conclude that he had changed my parent's house to his name and that he had illegally rented out the flat to an indian expat family. how he had collected the rent following his taking over of my dad's house, played with shares, foot his current flat installments, moonlight as a taxi driver, under-declare his income to avoid income tax, and so on... understood finally why he had exerted pressure on me to employ domestic helper instead. finally, i get to understand how and why he had over the years, orchestrated the eventual moving of my parents out of their flat, then out of his new house to live with me and for me to manage them. i guess greed has overcome him. i pity him.
so now, my dad will, in time to come, move into his old house. and in the meantime, my brother will have to terminate the tenant's lease, hire a domestic helper, do all the administration, etc. he should now understand the stress he put me through. the devil in me feels somewhat elated that he is being put through this now. but i cannot but worry about how things will turn out for my dad cos my brother has a very bad temper... and i am not sure how the domestic helper will be able to take to his habits and temper. if things go wrong, the person who will suffer will be my dad...
