i want to write about how mum and my current maid communicate with one another.
one of the factor i look for when i hire maids was language competencies. i needed the maid to be able to communicate with mum. and this maid that i eventually hired knows a little english. not much, but enough to get by with an elderly woman. so english became the language through which they communicate with one another. now, the interesting thing is that both the maid and mum's english are bad (very bad, to be exact) and often they ended up saying things that confuses each other. it has happened a few times before and it happened again today...

what happened today was... i came home and saw mum watching the tv and i sat beside her and chatted with her. and mum said the maid has been laughing at her whole day. and she naturally wondered why. to me, i was quick to conclude that her paranoia was acting up and tried to explain to her that the maid meant no harm. i later found out why the maid laughed and knowing the context, even i myself laughed out loud! here's how the conversation went:
context: mum was very keen to know more about the maid's family and had been asking questions about her mum, her siblings and whether she has children...
maid: "i got one son"
mum: "orhh, your son... girl or boy?"
maid: !!!
mum: ???
maid (lol!)...
well, the maid didn't know how to respond and started giggling. added to the fact that the maid's english was not exactly good, she didn't know how to tell mum about the mistake. and so, whenever she thought of the question, she would simply laugh out loud! but mum was totally lost as to why she was laughing...
