i had an interesting day this week on tuesday when i conducted a corporate program. the experience reminded me again that a facilitator's effectiveness is also dependent on the audience. that is to say, facilitator-audience dynamics is an important factor to the success of a program.
you see, i do corporate programs for my company staff. and usually, the audience for my programs tend to be rather vocal and/ or spontaneous. and with their responses, i tend to be more candid and spontaneous too. and we ended up feeding on each other's spontaneity and the outcome is often very fun and fulfilling. but this week for the first time, i had a class that was somehow very very difficult. they were just so unresponsive and boring. and naturally, my lessons become a tat boring too. i found myself invariably becoming very much less spontaneous. all my usual examples and candid responses disappeared. and my lessons became short and sharp. and my program ended at 4.30pm, instead of the usual 5.45pm.
but surprisingly, when i looked at the training evaluation feedback, the quantitative responses didn't fare too badly compared to other programs… i will need to reflect further on this...
interesting right?
