re-negotiation

the hr girl got back to me. after the first negotiation, the amount i counter-proposed was shot down. she said that the md needed to manage internal equity and that what was quoted to me was already the highest amongst ex-servicemen who join the company. i was not convinced. i gave a midway figure and asked her to get back to the md again. let's hope this is agreeable. although this figure is not ideal, it would still be within my target range. this whole game of pay negotiation is something new to me. i must admit that when the hr girl called me and told me of the outcome, i felt rather disappointed. but well, when i put things in perspective and sensemake that this is all part of the process, i had my closure. and i guessed i also learned a new lesson - that during the interview, never ever tell them that you look forward to working with them. it boost the hiring manager's confidence when it comes to pay negotiation. anyway, it's not all lost. i have learned my lessons, and the md has, through the hr girl, said that if i can prove myself, it will be easy to justify for a jump in increment. and i supposed, i have to start somewhere too. let's see what is the next outcome.

I think by telling them that you are looking forward to working with them provides a better opportunity of being offered the job.
If they persist, you might want to further propose that they do some adjustment after the confirmation period (if there is one) or within 3-6 mths. Best of luck!
