a dear friend just forwarded me the video of an upcoming musical (above) that he will be acting in. the musical is called "glass anatomy" and it follows broadly the storyline of the hugely popular chinese show "papa can you hear me sing" or 搭錯車 (translated as "taking the wrong bus/ car" literally).
i had watched the show in 1983, 30 years ago when i was in sec 4, and my memory of the show now was totally off. my impression was that the show was about how 2 girls left their village to the city and was raped in the bus. haha... it was quite embarrassing cos i went on and on about the trauma, etc. and my friend was like hmmm... he is acting in the show but certainly, there was nothing about buses, rapes and all the drama. haha! he must have been totally confused by me. well, i guessed as a young boy who had just experienced puberty, everything about my life then was about sex. and perhaps that was why what i recalled was the sex and the vice.
but of cos, the actual story is far from the sex and the vice. it is more about an adopted girl and her new found fame. and how, as a result of this fame, she forsake her dad out of embarrassment. this was despite her adopted dad's love for her. her dad, who was a retired army veteren, had devoted his life to bring her up after he found her amongst the trash one day when he was out picking bottles. the poor dad died eventually and the girl found him too late... haha... my summary of cos cannot do justice to the richness and depth of the storyline that was written and set against a backdrop of social change in taiwan during the early 80s.
but ya, i look forward to the musical!
