i brought my two managers out to lunch a couple of days ago and shared with them about how rewards will come when you focus your attention on doing your best rather than focusing on the rewards... and i shared with them some of the key principles i have observed at work my whole life. and i am convinced it works. and they listened. but i wasn't too sure if they agreed.
today, there was a meeting where i had to do 2 presentations. but as i had been asked to attend a training, i couldn't attend the meeting and tasked my manager to do the brief instead. after the meeting, i messaged one of them and asked how the presentation went. he said good but we had more arrows. and i told him to be positive about it. work is given to us becos we are appreciated for being able. so we should be happy about it. and in response, he gave a cheerful reply, said yes, and restated my principles... i was dumbfounded for a while. he remembered! and i smiled to myself. thinking back, i must have looked silly during the training session.
anyway, this was what i shared as my key work principles...
(1) do your best
(2) value-add
(3) prioritize
in all you do, give your best. rewards will come without you seeking it. in all you do, don't just do it like everyone else. value-add. this way, you improve, and the company improve. and rewards will come without you asking. lastly, in everything you do, if you try to spread your effort equally, you will die of exhaustion without achieving anything. work is infinite. cannot never finish one. if push come to shaft, prioritize. and the way to do it is - your bosses priorities are your priorities. simple. not that you are carrying balls, rather, in everything we do, we are paid to solve our bosses problems. if everyone up the chain thinks the same, the company can only go in one single direction. upwards. and when that happens, rewards will come downwards. naturally...
agree?
