sorry...

"sorry" is the hardest word. so they say. but somehow in singapore, sorry is the most common word one would hear. come on, it is so common that there is already a phrase that trivialize the word sorry! "sorry no cure!", does this sound familiar? for example, when there is some maintenance work for a lift, a signage would be put up. and the signage says "sorry for the inconvenience caused". and earlier on, when i bought my sandals, i passed the cashier staff my atm card, and after she keyed in the amount, she said "sorry, can you key in your pin (personal identification number) number please"... i was like huh? why say sorry...

to say sorry is to apologize. and since you have never done anything wrong, why say sorry? in the case of the signage, wouldn't it be appropriate to say "we regret the inconvenience caused". and in the case of the cashier staff, should she just say, "hi sir, please key in your pin number"?...

sorry, sorry, sorry...

sighs...
