mum's 80!

mum turned 80 today (or yesterday since the clock had gone pass midnight).

and to make her day memorable, i made her 长寿 mee sua (aka long life rice noodles). interestingly, when i told her i wanted to make mee sua for her, she got all excited. and she reminded me that i should get those loose ones rather than those in packs. on top of that, she reminded me that it must be mee sua. cannot be anything else. well, you see, for hokkiens (my dialect group), it is customary for us to have mee sua for birthdays. and when i cooked it, reminded me not to break the strands! haha! the longer it is, the longer life she will enjoy... at least this was what the older generation believe in. and that was what i did. i simply drop the whole 2 bundles for her. and i also noticed. as she ate, she kept holding it up to see how long the strands were! lol! but well, i could see she was very happy about it. but that was not all. i got her the shou tao (longevity peach) too. and that was to be offered to the gods for blessing her with long life (according to chinese, once we hit 80, one could be considered to be "hao ming" or "good life")... simple gestures, but i knew it meant a lot to her. and to top it all off, i brought her to my brother's place and we went out for a birthday dinner followed by a simple cutting of a birthday cake for her.

happy 80th birthday mum!

:-)
