Almost wanted to go to Melaka. I went to KL instead. I think KL has lost its charm.
i thought so too when i visited kl last year. and as for melaka, i think it has also lost it's peranakan charm. it's very much more malay and touristy now. but don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with malay culture. it's a beautiful culture. it's only that melaka has for a long time been special in malaysia in that things are very peranakan and shows it's mixed cultural heritage. but now, the whole feel is different. apart from having lots of visitors from all over malaysia (which then lends it's very malay feel), the place is also super crowded with overseas tourist crowd - lots of ang mos and cina people! and from what i can gather from talking to the people, many of the local peranakans and orang belanda have moved out of their enclave, converted them into shops and employing chinese people to run them. so... sighs...
my own personal view is that gaining the heritage city endorsement has instead made the whole place lost it's heritage feel... ironic.
