decided to go for a high tea today. most of the hotels were fully booked and we managed to get a table for 2 at the merchant court swissotel. for the price of $38+++, the food was quite disappointing. it comprised mostly sub-standard local fare, some japanese stuff, lots of starch and way too little variety. and they sell it as an 'international' buffet!
when we arrived, we had a huge crowd of locals who acted like it was the 7th month hungry ghost festival! and i thought they were too shabbily dressed for a hotel - people in flip flops, singlets, shorts, bermudas and what have you. anyway, the huge crowd had apparently arrived early and waited at the entrance before 3.30pm - the time the restaurant open. and when we went to get our food, there were people cutting queues and grabbing the satays and tempura! duh!
we were unfortunate to be seated beside a family of 3 - a santa claus-shaped mother and 2 daughters. we were amazed at their ability to eat, or rather, gorge themselves stupid. first, the mother went to get her food and she came back with a bowl of noodles, and a huge plateful of chicken wings, satays, sandwiches, prawns, crabsticks and so on. at first we thought this plate was for the family to share, then the daughters started to come back, each with their own plates, all filled to the brim! and it was such a disgusting sight to see them gorge their face with the noodles and food. slurp slurp slurp, gobble gobble gobble! argh! for a moment, i wondered how they could continue swallowing when as they continued pushing food into their mouth. and as if this was not enough, once they finished this round, they all went again for a second round, and then the third round... each round consistently with bowls and plates full of food! and oh, need to mention this - one of the daughter came back with a huge plateful of salmon sashimi... argh! we also made an interesting observation. quite a few of the people who went for the buffet had the same body shape! the shape of a snowman! hahaha... talk about christmas high tea!
anyway, it's been a long while since we last went for high tea. and we were again reminded of the ugly singaporean. next time round, i think we'll stick to english high tea. no more international food high tea. simple bite-sized english sandwiches, scones, muffins, cakes, and of course, a wide variety of tea!
but for now, it's time to avoid anymore buffet!
:-)
