was at ikea and chanced upon an ex-colleague, a lady in her early 40s. she was with was another lady... looked like she's in her mid-20s... called out to my colleague and she walked up to me. we exchanged some pleasantries and next thing i knew, the mid-20s lady called out "hello uncle". my colleague quickly introduced her as her daughter. secondary 4 (16 yr old). for that one single moment, i didn't know how to respond. the only words that i could utter was something like - oh, so big already huh?... in my mind, i was so so totally unprepared for someone who looked so `old' to address me as uncle. well... of cos, there had been cases of market aunties calling me uncle... but that was in a very different context...
hmmm... then again, my nieces are already close to 20 yrs old and they call me `uncle'... hmmm... whatever... some things one just cannot not avoid. anyway, back to my colleague. despite the split second shock, i quickly regain myself. we spoke for a quick moment more and she left...
