often i would get calls from friends asking science questions when they get caught not knowing the answers while giving their children tuition... this happened again this evening when i was walking about at parkway parade with bee. i got a call from lay pheng and the conversation went something like that:
lpheng: xxx, can i ask you a science question? i am giving my son science tuition and we got into this argument...
me: ok, go on...
lpheng: ok, ok... listen ah... there are 3 beakers. these beakers were covered with a piece of cover to which a fixed amount of water was poured. for the first beaker, the water stayed on the surface. for the second, the cover got soaked and altho it felt damp, it looked dry. for the last beaker, the water got soaked and the cover looked dry. but some of the water seeped thru the cover and could be seen in the beaker. now the question is - which of the cover is most absorbent?
me: of cos it's the second one la...
lpheng: why? why not the third? my son and i were arguing about it!
me: well, think about sanitary napkins... (thinking of cos of the whisper brand advertisement... freedom! ~~~ :-)
lpheng (momentarily dumbfounded...): ahhh... oh, ok... got it... thanks.
we hung up after that... sensing her dilemma with such an analogy, i quickly sent her an sms... `you can see the same principles being applied in the pampers (baby diapers) advertisement'
sure enough, she replied:`oh, ok, this one easier to explain'.
i smiled to myself and carried on my shopping.
