house rules? wtf!

house rules my foot!

since the condo i live in changed security company, they have this very unacceptable practice - there would be strictly no overnight parking for any non-residents... i came to know of this when bee tried to stay overnight and was told he could not park his car. what nonsense. it has been several months and i have not made any noise given that the guards had been rather empathetic and asked that they would close one eye, although i still cannot accept this stupid ruling. but this morning, i blew my top! we returned from a midnight show at about 2.30am. and i asked him to stay over considering it was late and that mum was hospitalized and thus not at home. and that was when i blew my top... you see, we arrived at the guardhouse, and this was how the conversation went...

security guard (told us flat in our face): sir, you cannot park overnight.

me (half explaining, half pleading): err, it is 2.30am and the parking would be only for a few hours.

security guard: no sir, you cannot park overnight. this is the rule. if you want to park overnight, you must apply permit from management...

me (starting to boil): come on, i understand there is a rule. and i know about applying permit. but that is for prolonged overnight parking. it is already 2.30am! the parking will only for a couple of hours. my friend will leave for work by 7-plus. it is not like as though he will be parking here for a few days.

security guard (starting to negotiate): no sir, this is the rule. you must apply permit even if it is for one night. errr, but you leaving after a few hours huh? ok, i will allow you to come in (i started boiling, what the shit, i am the resident here and my entry to my own condo is subjected to the security guard's agreement!) but you must leave before 6am. the management come to work at 7.30am and they will scold me if they find out. (turning to bee) sir, can i have your particulars?

me (now boiling hot): come on, leave before 6am? what rubbish! if the management scold you, tell them come and see me! now take my particulars instead. tell the management to see me if they have an issue!

darned! i totally cannot accept this stupid ruling! i made my way to the management office just now. the manager is new. i explained the situation to him and he started by saying it is the house rule (bluddy shit!). and after listening to me, he himself felt the rule is not realistic. then he said it is the security company practice (wah ranz... first, house rule, then security company... harlow, get your facts right! security company work based on condo management guidelines!) i mean, this is a residence, not a hotel! and for that matter, if i were to live in public housing, i am not subjected to such stupid rules! i can rattle off a thousand and one possibilities of people needing to stay over for a night! anyway, i got my point to him, he promised to convey the feedback to the management and the security company and will get back to me.

well... under most circumstances, i am very nice and accommodating. but it is unreasonable irritants like this that gets into my way that makes me bitchy.

what a start to the day.

lesson learnt: never tell an irritated person that this is the rule. it makes them mad!

the hobbit

watched the hobbit, an unexpected journey last night. midnight show at downtown east. but i felt it was a tat too similar to the lord of the rings (lotr), particularly the fellowship of the ring. i felt the magic that we saw in lotr was somewhat lost in this new production. also, the show was a little draggy and i yawned quite a bit through the show. made worst by the combined effect of my long tiring day and the bad sleep the night before. but well, it was a reasonably good mental break for me nonetheless.

mental break

frankly speaking, mum's hospitalization is kinda a mental break for me.

you see, when she is hospitalized, i am assured she is looked after by professionals and need not worry about her well-being, i can go out of the house any time i want without worrying about whether she will go mental (she gets suspicious when i leave the house, even for a few minutes), i can go anywhere in the house, and do what i want without having her questioning me where i was and what i was doing... in short, i get my mental break from mum.

i know it does not sound right, and i do feel a little guilty about it sometime back. but have come to reconcile with it. caregivers also need breaks from their charges.

in yet again...

yesterday, we celebrated the birth of my nephew.

and today, mum got hospitalized again. and that was after she tripped and fell last evening at the car park after dinner, went mental before bed, throw tantrums this morning. total change in everything within split seconds. and i didn't even know what happened. anyway, finally managed to convince her to let me bring her to the hospital. it's really tiring to be constantly at the receiving end of her tantrums. but what to do. when she became less irritated today, i asked why she was angry with me and why she threw tantrums, she totally had no idea what i was talking about.

sighs...

buah duku langsat

as a young boy, there were specific times of the year to expect certain fruits, especially seasonal ones. and over time, i came to associate these fruits with major festivals such as the chinese lunar new year (mandarin oranges), the birthday of the taoist emperor of heaven (sugar cane [although this is not a fruit per se]), mid-autumn festival (pomelo), the hungry ghost festivals (rambutans, buah rambai), or special periods of the year such as year-end school holidays (durians, mangosteens, duku langsat), etc. and oh, i always look forward to eating the buah duku langsat! the fragrance from the flesh is really a heavenly!

and yes, this fruit is now in season again!

hurray!

it's a boy!

today, we welcome the first grandson in the family. 8th grandchild, first boy, after a 24-year wait and 7 beautiful nieces! my dad would be very happy if he is still around! and needless to say, it was a welcoming high for the family, especially my mum. been a long long while since we have any major red event in the family... well, other than the recent 80th birthday celebrations for mum.

hermaphroditic sex

can you imagine how hermaphrodites have sex? haha... that would be the epitome of 69s right?! and imagine how things would turn out if 2 individuals can fertilize each other and carry each other's babies. it would be so weird wouldn't it? but of cos, in humans, this do not happen although we do have hermaphrodites amongst us. rather, i am talking about snails.

i see snails mating quite often when i walk sapphie (my dog). and that was what i saw again this morning. i posted this image (picture) in facebook and next thing i knew, a friend of mine commented "ewww". it was an interesting comment, especially when this friend of mine took a course in sexology during his undergrad days (so i was told). but yup, i thought about it and acknowledged that such sights are not common to non-biologists nor would they actively search for it unless their hobbies revolve around nature and stuff. but hey, this is nature, i commented, such sights are to be wow-ed instead of ewww-ed. and to further educate him, i shared the snails are hermaphrodite and yup, he liked the comment.

i had another interesting comment, again from a non-biologist. he said "early morning, watch snail porn". haha... interesting how we human tend to humanize/ put human values to events we see right? before i get philosophical about it... well, snail porn or not, all i can say was this - if it is porn i am watching, i would be bored stiff (no pun) seeing things happen s o    s l o w l y! then again, think we humans have unlearned lots of things over evolutionary time. need to relearn, to boost birthrates... taking things   s u p e r    s l o w is good for relationship building...

:-)

oh, by the way, here's a little tidbit for all. do you know that the word "hermaphrodite" comes from the greek god hermaphroditus. he was the son of hermes and aphrodite in greek mythology.

weird habits!

i have some rather weird habits... i keep things. ok, ok, rather than call it weird habits, let's put this as i am a very sentimental person. so sentimental it is beyond logic sometimes... for example, i still have some of my biology sketchbooks and school exercise books from my secondary schools days. yup, secondary school days. they are more than 30 years old by now. yup, older than many of my blog readers... lol!

i do get into this habit to clear things once a while and minimally on an annual basis when i do my annual spring cleaning, i will revisit some of these things and throw away some of the stuff that i consider "lesser sentimental value"... heh heh... i happened to be doing some clearing of my stuff yesterday, reorganizing some of my files, etc and decided i should throw away some of the older letters/ correspondences. and as i starting throwing, i got into the mood of discarding things. and guess what? i threw away a whole thick stack of monthly utility bills. bills that i had accumulated since mid 1996 when i got my property!

haha...

day out at the beach

saturday was a superbly busy day... went for breakfast, then to the beach, then home for a rest while i shower sapphie, then out for durian, and after that to the beach for a long walk-a-jog with sapphie, and then home to wash up before heading out again to the shopping center for dinner and walkabout. and i did all these with mum in her wheelchair.

super exhausted. but superbly fulfilling.

:-)

everything at once

everything at once
lenka

as sly as a fox, as strong as an ox
as fast as a hare, as brave as a bear
as free as a bird, as neat as a word
as quiet as a mouse, as big as a house

all i wanna be, all i wanna be, oh
all i wanna be is everything

as mean as a wolf, as sharp as a tooth
as deep as a bite, as dark as the night
as sweet as a song, as right as a wrong
as long as a road, as ugly as a toad

as pretty as a picture hanging from a fixture
strong like a family, strong as i wanna be
bright as day, as light as play
as hard as nails, as grand as a whale

all i wanna be, oh, all i wanna be, oh
all i wanna be is everything, everything at once
everything at once, oh, everything at once

as warm as the sun, as silly as fun
as cool as a tree, as scary as the sea
as hot as fire, cold as ice
sweet as sugar and everything nice

as royal as a queen, as buzzed as a bee
as stealth as a tiger, smooth as a glider
pure as a melody, pure as i wanna be

all i wanna be, oh, all i wanna be, oh
all i wanna be is everything, everything at once

of asian names (2)

in my earlier post, i have reflected about the construct of asian names. here, i shall talk a little about nicknames. there is this interesting observation i have made about how the different generation of people make use of nicknames. generations of the past used nickname for very practical reasons such as to protect the individuals from harm, in addition to convenience. today, nicknames are used purely for convenience. let me explain further.

during my parents' generation (and probably before that), names are treated with deep reverence and respect as it captures the essence of not just the generation, but also the clan. added to that, the (third) character given to the individual also reflect the wishes and expectations of the parents on their kids and often auspicious sounding. in short, there is something magical about a person's name. take for example, after translation, my mum's name (combination of second and third characters) means "golden girl" (i.e the second character is kim, and the last character is neo). "kim" being the aspirations of my grand parents for her to bring riches to the family and "neo", a commonly used character for girls for peranaken families that means "virtuous girl". to make things interesting, while names given carry auspicious and nice meaning words, there is also a belief that jealous lurking spirits would try to thwart the aspirations by attacking the baby. to prevent the spirits from creating havoc and to mislead the spirits, parents would thus resort to using nicknames that sound bad. using again the example of my mum... she was given the nickname "busuk" (rotten, foul smelling) by her father, my granddad. the story went this way... as a kid, she was prone to sickness. as a result, my granddad brought her to the taoist temple to consult the gods (via the medium). of cos, the advice by the medium was - use a nickname to cheat the evil spirits, thus her name "busuk". and accordingly, my mum's sickness disappeared.

the above is the use of nicknames with a clear purpose of protecting the individual. on top of that, nicknames could also be given out of convenience or simply, fun. such nicknames, when used over an extended period of time, could become the preferred names to address the individual. take for example, my mum and her sisters. according to my mum, my uncles gave them nicknames that reflect their different breast shapes and sizes when they were young (don't ask me why, i could only guess they gave them these nicknames during their teenage years and the nicknames stayed). and so, amongst them, there are tek-pis (flat chested), tek-jang (long breast), and tek-bung (large breast). this was similarly done for me and my brother. during my toddler days, i was nicknamed "tua sar" (big stupid/ idiot) and my brother "suey sar" (small stupid/ idiot) by my nanny/ landlady. this nickname is so significantly different from our actual names (that sounded very patriotic). but i actually find the nicknames very affectionate. haha... these days, the practices of giving convenient nicknames continue, although i would say people are a lot less creative these days (just imagine, the most common names are "baby", "ah boy", and "ah girl").

:-)

of asian names (1)

recently, have talked quite a bit about names with my mum. and thought i should write something about it here. given the large scope of the topic, i will use 2 posts to capture what i want to share. in this first post, i shall talk about the construct of names, something that i noticed many younger people do not know (and even some in my age group). in the second post, i will reflect on the use of nicknames.

firstly, the construct of names. there is a long history in this. but these days, as a general guide, a typical asian name, specifically asians of non-malay descent, comprise 3-characters. the first character reflects the person's lineage (surname), the second character reflecting his/ her generational name, and the last character, the person's name itself. take for example, lky's full name is "li guangyao". "li" as in his family name. it reflects his lineage and all his ancestors carry the same character. "guang" is his generational name. every single son in his generation (including my paternal side male cousins) all carry this second character. for that matter, my dad's generation character is "bao", and my dad and all my uncles has this same second character "bao". on the same token, my grandfather's generation character is "ming"... far as i know, old chinese families do make use of certain poems as reference to decide what character to use for their generational character. as for a person's actual name, it is captured in the last character. in my case, "xin"... just one character. to address a person respectfully, he would be referred to by his first character followed by a respectable term eg for lky (our first pm) - li xiansheng ("li" as his family name, "xiansheng"'s closest equivalent is "mister" in english, but in chinese, it means "earlier borned" or "elder"), or if addressing a person with respectable recognition to his generation,  would be called "guangyao", and if it is just him, he can be addressed as "yao", or if a 2-syllabic reference is preferred, then it would be "a-yao"...

interestingly, the first character (the family/ ancestral name)/ surname is the equivalent of the last name in the western context. curiously, i have asked before why this disparity between the western and eastern practices. i do not and still have not found the answer. for asians (including chinese, japanese, korean, etc), my reflection of the practice of placing the family name in front reflected the reverence and deep respect asians accord to their clan and thus takes the front of his/ her name. i have no explanation for why western cultures place it at the end, perhaps, in the western culture, it is always self first, then society? whereas for asians, it is society/ community/ clan above self? i donno. as for the history behind this 3-character concept, i am also not sure. but i suspect its history came from confucian practices that emphasized a whole lot on rituals and orderliness in the family, community and society. whatever the history, there are practical outcomes to this concept of names in the chinese society. for example, if i see another relative with the second character "ming", he would naturally be considered my elder (by generation and not by age) as he would be of the same generation as my granddad. extending this logic, imagine in the old days where members of the "shen" clan live in the same village/ community and where people do not travel so widely, such names would minimize inbreeding within the community thereby preventing genetically diseases from manifesting (something that happened to the ancient egyptians that resulted in the decline of the egyptian dynasties). such practices are gradually lost in modern history. the second character, that reflects the generation, is largely not practiced these days. and a person's name is gradually changed from single-character to dual-character. the outcome of this is still a 3-character name still, but conceptually a whole lot of history in naming protocol has been lost. i attribute this to factors such as lost of a person's roots and westernization of subsequent generations as a result of the huge migration of southern chinese in the 1800s to south east asia, a region that was largely colonized by western countries back then.

i noticed that in recent decades, probably as a result of being influenced by western culture, there is a shift in using and placing surnames at the end of the name (westerners refer to surname as "last name"). to many elders, this is a no-no and very disrespectful. they find it very difficult to place the surname at the end of their name. but we can see a shift in this attitude amongst the younger generations. i had the chance to interact with many japanese and koreans. initially i was rather confused by how they write their names. but in the privacies of their houses, they explained that to them, as a community, due to their long exposure to americans, they are now able to comfortably switch their first and last names without having their own people being confused. take for example hiromi iwasaki. she is very popular singer in the late-70s/80s (& i so adore her songs!). when i mentioned this to my japanese friends, they were quick to exclaim "oh, iwasaki hiromi!..." and they explained that iwasaki is her family name and amongst japanese they place it right in front, whereas hiromi is the name given to her and is thus placed behind (japanese do not have the concept of a generational name far as i am aware)...

in this regard, we chinese has quite a bit to catch up insofar as accepting and being able to switch this use comfortably. so, for lky, he would be guangyao li... a name that would make anybody's dad's roll in his grave... oh, wait, my dad's was cremated... then again, yup, that reflects the emotional tension over a name construct...

haha!

"naked" man

it wouldn't be complete the write about the "naked" lady and not about the "naked" man... so here goes.

again, it was at the swimming pool that i frequent. was there last week in the morning and there was an ang mo (caucasian) man at the corner of the pool. i noticed him when i first arrived at the pool and was a little taken aback... i thought he was naked. and on closer look (after i changed up and walked close to where he was tanning), he was wearing a skin colour swimming trunk.

but really, he could be wearing a woman's panties and no one's any wiser cos the colour is the same tone as his skin. he left not too long after i arrived. and it was clear that he knew his trunks was a tat controversial for he put on a pair of berms before walking away...

choice of perspectives (2)

i have a friend, almost an ex to be exact. he was supposed the one before james, but he rejected me... and i was a bitter person and i avoided him after that. but in recent years, i have decided to forgive and forget. after all, life is too short to hold grudges. and i looked him up and re-established contact with him. and we sms each other once a while.

i noticed this one thing - he is a terribly negative and bitter person. from our smses, it seemed to be that he has a negative view about everything in the world. he is afraid of pain, he is cocksure that every person will go against him, that and every thing that can possibly happen will be to his disadvantage, he is confident that bad things will happen to him, and he is petrified that he will be unprepared for the worst, etc... even when he goes for holiday, he will focus on small things like he is going alone and thus, he is cursed for being gay, etc... after talking to him, i sometimes find his negativity affecting me. also, and invariably, by virtue of the fact that i am less negative than him, i naturally become the more positive person. and all the time, in our smses, i will remind him of how things are not as bad as they seemed, and that there are ways to see things from the positive angle, and that he should just live his life to the best he could... our sms exchanges will almost always end with him ignoring me...

and today, i got an interesting sms from him... this was roughly how it went...

him: if you board a bus, and you see a group of 5 over-sized south asians. and they are carrying a lot of things and they are blocking the walkway. also, they did not flash their bus pass and the driver did not want to move until they do so... after a while, one of them reluctantly collected their passes and flashed it. only then did the drive move the bus. how will you respond. honestly. and i do not want any zen type of response....

me: well, i will just look at them and enjoy the experience. i mean, honestly, that is what i will do. i like to people watch and such incidents would allow me to see how the drama unfold and the reactions of people involved, directly and indirectly.

him: but they are deliberately holding us all up and making us all late for our appointments. and they are deliberately cheating the bus company. how can you not be angry with them?

me: well, from your sms, ok, perhaps i am not normal, and so, please do not expect me to give you a response that would meet your criteria of "normality".

him: that is so you... (he sounded a tat frustrated at my response that did not conform with his expectations)

me: hey, life is stressful enough. so why let such additional trivial things stress me out further? why not focus on the more positive things? of cos there will be times where i will bitch and i will be angry, but i mean, for what right? life goes on. i have learned to see things from the positive perspective. what can i do to change them and their upbringing? nothing right? so, might as well hope they can improve for the better but for the moment, enjoy the many wonders of god that many of us now no longer noticed... eg birds flying, butterflies, orchids blooming on roadside trees...

he did not reply after that... well, after all these months of non-stop negative smses from him, i learned one thing from him - you cannot change a person if he refuses to change. then again, you can learn not to be like him. and in this case, i actually learned to be a little more positive.

choice of perspectives (1)

mum is a super duper negative person and regardless of what issues, she will always see the negative side. and for such people, there is no use trying to convince them otherwise... here's what happened today...

context: she has not really cleared her bowels well over the last 3-4 days. and despite clearing a little here and there, it was obvious that the main bulk has not left her system, considering the large amount of food that she took over the last few days...

mum: i did not shit for the past many days... i am sure there is something very wrong with me. i must be dying already. my body is breaking down...
me: hmmm, cannot be la. you cleared some yesterday... the rest will probably take a while to come out. so, don't worry, everything will be ok... any case, if you are really worried, i will help apply the enema for you.
mum: no, no, no need. i am sure i am dying already...

it took me awhile of coaxing before she finally agreed... moments later, she cleared 2 hard "pellets" of shit, probably the size slightly larger than of marbles...

mum: so much things shot out... but i think it is the fluids that you pumped in. and only 2 pellets came out. so, i think there is something very wrong with me. i must be dying already. my body is breaking down.
me: hmmm, cannot be la. you should understand. the 2 pellets had caused the obstruction. i am sure in time to come, the rest will come out, so don't worry. you will be fine. any case, if you are really worried that the earlier enema is not effective, i will help apply another one for you.
mum: no, no, no need. i am sure i am dying already...

i left her to watch the tv and 2 hours later, i saw her rushing to the toilet...

mum: i shat so much in my diapers.... and then when i went into the toilet, i shat so much more. how can this be, i am sure there is something very wrong with me. i must be dying already. my body is breaking down...
me: hmmm, cannot be la. you cleared 2 pellets earlier, and i am sure all these coming out now is becos the blockage has been removed. so, it is a good thing.
mum: no, no, no. cannot be. i have never shat so much, i am sure i am dying already...

hmmm... challenging right? no shit also dying, shit also dying... i decided against convincing her but just to assure her that everything is alright and that she is fine... and this is something that happen very often, be it about shitting, peeing, eating... anything! she is just convinced about the negative angle of things. but of cos, there is one very important thing i learned from her through all these - and that is patience.

:-)

life of pi

life of pi... read the book in 2001 when was first released. james had bought it soon after it was release. was rather excited when i learned that it would be made into a movie and released end-2102. and finally, i went to watch the movie with my mum yesterday. frankly, i couldn't really remember the story after such a long time, and thus, went in to the cinema with no preconceived notion of how the story would unfold nor expectations of adherence to the storyline. i was not disappointed. for that matter, i loved the show!

there is always something magical in ang lee's productions. and in this show, i supposed it is his insistence on using asians, as well as the abilities to see and capture the movies from an asian perspective. i was able to so intimately connect with the scenes and dialogue that captured the various religions. of hinduism, islam, christianity, buddhism, and so on... and more so, ang lee's abilities to put all these together so neutrally, through the eyes and interpretations of the main character, pi. and it resonates with me, for i believed strongly that religion is a very personal journey. and pi's journey to finding his faith is just so magically captured by yan matel and the directorship of ang lee.

ps: and as to be expected, mum didn't like it. she couldn't understand the story other than it was about a boy who got stranded at sea with a tiger... :-)

sexy underwear

there is something i totally cannot understand... why do shopping centers place lady sales staff at male underwear sections? i mean, if these are very sexy young ladies, i could accept it that they could possibly boost the sales, especially to straight horny men. but come on, what i experienced thus far had been those aunties who are in their late-30s or more. but of cos, their product knowledge was rather good!

heh heh... and i said this cos as i shopped around for my sandals, i decided to also take a look around the underwear section. somehow, i do enjoy looking at the different underwear, especially over the past couple of years cos i noted the "sexy quotient" of the male underwear has increased manifold! compared to years ago, we now have all sorts of different models - tanga, thongs, g-strings, minis, etc, different prints, as well as different materials these days... and to make it interesting, shops are openly displaying all different underwear on mannequins. and to boost the sales, they are also making the extra efforts to stuff the crotch with extra tissue to make the bulge extra large!

and so, amidst all these mannequins that are oozing with sexiness, i cannot but felt super duper awkward and a tad embarrassed to have aunties going around asking if i need help. notwithstanding the fact that their product knowledge was tip top!

hahaha!

ps: now, please don't see this post as discriminatory, i have nothing against these ladies... just that i felt shopping centers need to be more sensitive to shoppers who might be a little shy, like me... hahaha!

omg ghost!

ladies, when you put on make up, put on a tone that makes you look good, not make you look like ghost... come on. life is stressful enough, so please for f-sake, don't add on to people's stress. that is not the meaning of dress to kill! damned!  and i wanna say this again after what i saw earlier...

you see, i was at the shopping center and i saw a woman from the back. she had long black hair and wore a skin-toned top. looking form her back, i thought she was naked... but when she turned around... arrrrggghhhhh!!! i thought she was a ghost! the compact that she used was so pale that it made her face white and bloodless. and to make things worst, she outlined her eyes with a thick black mascara and she had bright red lipstick! i got a fright for that moment (just like that taxi driver in the clip above)... wtf wtf wtf!

hahaha!

"naked" lady

was at the shopping center earlier, and as i was about to take the lift to the car park, i saw a lady.

her back was towards me. this lady has very long straight black hair, so long it reached her buttocks. and she wore an oversized top. it was those woven material and grips her waist tightly and other than that, it was totally oversized at the shoulder, the sleeves, etc... so much so that the extra materials draped over her short mini skirt... and here's the salah (wrong) part...

this lady was superbly fair, like tofu, and her woven top was the same colour of her skin. so from far, other than her long straight black hair that reached her buttocks, everything else looked one tone - her skin colour tone. and it looked like she's naked from the back...

salah salah salah...

gangnam!?!

oh please please please... no more gangnam style. i am so sick of the song and dance. totally overkill i thought (and i believe many others think so too). yet, it kept going on and on and on and on...

sorry...

"sorry" is the hardest word. so they say. but somehow in singapore, sorry is the most common word one would hear. come on, it is so common that there is already a phrase that trivialize the word sorry! "sorry no cure!", does this sound familiar? for example, when there is some maintenance work for a lift, a signage would be put up. and the signage says "sorry for the inconvenience caused". and earlier on, when i bought my sandals, i passed the cashier staff my atm card, and after she keyed in the amount, she said "sorry, can you key in your pin (personal identification number) number please"... i was like huh? why say sorry...

to say sorry is to apologize. and since you have never done anything wrong, why say sorry? in the case of the signage, wouldn't it be appropriate to say "we regret the inconvenience caused". and in the case of the cashier staff, should she just say, "hi sir, please key in your pin number"?...

sorry, sorry, sorry...

sighs...

work vs play

my sis smsed me earlier lamenting how frustrated she was that the internet connection at her hotel in kuantan was intermittent and that it was difficult to get work done... and i was like - wtf! she has accompanied her husband on his working trip and has gone along with her kids as they are on their year-end school holiday. so, technically, she and her kids are on holiday! and instead of spending good quality time with her kids, she has brought along her laptop and wanted to get work done!

really, sometimes i don't know whether i should be happy or sad for her. in this case, i was really happy that she was able to have the opportunity to go for a holiday with her family. and this was especially so becos she is a property agent and could hardly afford to have time off. and to make matter worst, her relationship with her kids (all in the late teens and early 20s) have been very bad and they often fight over mother-daughter stuff, i.e, trivial stuff, such as mum wants this or that to be cleaned but daughters refused to, etc. and so when she told me she's going away with her daughters, i thought they could make time to do some serious bonding... sighs. by doing so, isn't she sending the wrong signals to her kids inadvertently that they are not important and that her work is more important? sad right?

seriously... one should never mix work and play when it comes to such situations. when it is time to work, do work very hard. but when it is time to play, don't work! never never mix the two up!

hmmph!

new pair of sandals

bought a new pair of sandals today. and this is to replace a previous pair that was purchased two months back but somehow went missing. sighs... but well, looking on the brighter side, this one looks nicer and probably a little more comfortable.

gay tensions @ pool

i had the chance to go to the pool again this morning after my chiropractic treatment. it was early, about 10am, and i really didn't expect any gay men. so i thought it was a good time to have a relaxing tan and to catch up with my readings. but i was wrong...

first tension
i arrived and got in to change up before heading towards my favourite corner of the pool. as i walked, i bumped into my ex-staff/ student. he was there with his wife and he was supervising his kid's swimming lesson. hmmm... we exchanged some pleasantries and off i went to the tanning area. but hmmm, i got very conscious of myself once i reached the tanning area as there was a guy with a huge hard on lying face up. at that moment. that was my first tension. internal tensions. so instead of getting a deck chair and lying down, i went for a swim. heh heh... good exercise no doubt, esp when there was also a motivator in the form of a cute lean chap swimming beside me... heh! it was about 45min later before i went to the deck chair when the guy with the hard on left and my ex-staff/ staff finished bathing his child and left.

second tension
after my swim, i went to the wading pool to read my papers. and as i was reading, a cute (super cute) hunk came by. he had just finished his swim and wanted to rest in the wading pool (where i was). he was wearing a trunk that emphasized his bulge. i was not sure, but it seemed like he was wearing a c-ring and made it protrude quite a bit. and the trunk's smooth shiny material that was a tat tiny for his small waist and onion bumps was actually quite nice... he sat at the opposite end and spend the next half hour or so stretching and resting. well, it was a nice sight nonetheless, but as i glanced at him, i continued to wonder about his package... that was my second tension, curiosity tension.

third tension
just at about the same time, the tanning area behind me started to get crowded. and at least 3 other guys in skimpy trunks came arrived. it was interesting cos i noticed the cute hunk sitting at the end of the wading pool stealing glances at them. i turned around and i too noted some of the guys cruising each other there. quite funny actually. it was like "a" glanced at "b", "b" glanced at "c", "c" looked at "d" who was tanning face up with his assets quite clearly observable, and "d" was obviously in a world of his own... but other than glances, nothing else happened. so, that was the third tension, sexual tension (and perhaps, this was the most interesting and frustrating tension).

fourth tension
lastly, there was an elderly gay person amidst all the tanners at the tanning area. he must have been in his late-50s or probably 60s. his whole body was all wrinkled and he was totally scrawny. but he wore a luminous bright lime green trunks and hmmm, i was not sure, but i suspected he might have stuffed some tissue into his crotch area. and everyone turned to look at him at least once. and whatever crossed everyone's mind, i was sure it was not pleasant. this elderly person was either damned super bo chup (couldn't care less) or simply just oblivious to people's stares, for he went on to parade himself where he was and later walked to the deep pool for a swim. that was the fourth tension. and this one, i got no one word that could describe it... disgust, pity, sympathetic... i donno. whatever it was, it was just not a pleasant tension.

that was the 4 tensions that i observed/ felt almost all together this morning. it was indeed an interesting morning.

ps: i got the answer about the bulge when i went to change up later on. heh heh...

well well well...

well, once a while, it is good to take a third person's perspective and look at oneself. and it is also a good practice to ask people to share their frank views about oneself. well of cos, you do that only with people that you are very sure will give you objective and frank views. and well, on your own part, you should also not get angry when and if a negative comment is given. i do that all the time. and when we are able to do so, we can better see our strength and weaknesses and take these perspectives as a good starting point to improve ourselves...

heh heh... the above paragraph is a classic example of how i sound like when i write before editing. i have tons of well well well all over the paragraph! hahaha... if you have noticed, my blog postings are never really firmed up until say 2-3 days after cos i will revisit my postings and read it again to see if the sentence structure if correct, if there are too many repetitive wells and ands... etc. and of cos, i will also post a picture or two to make the blog post a little more fun...

well (here i go again, lol!)... just a quick reflection on my writing habits...

:-)

oximeter

finally found out what the device that hospitals use to measure oxygen in a person is called. yes, it is called an oximeter. and it was interesting cos i had wanted to purchase one to measure my mum's spo2 level at home and i did not know what it was called. and so, i had to resort to describe it at the pharmacy...

me: 'cuse me, do you have that device that the nurses use to clip onto your finger to take our oxygen-level reading?
service staff: huh? what we have are all displayed here. you take a look.
me: erm... no, what i want is not here.
service staff: what do you want again?
me: you know, the clip clip thing. when we go hospital, the nurse will clip onto our finger and measure our oxygen-level.
another service staff: oh, that one har? no we don't have. sorry.
me: ok, thanks, do you know where i can get it?
both service staff (blank look...): ....
me: ok, never mind, thanks anyway...

frustrating right? and so, i google for it... device that measure oxygen. and hey presto... oxymeter... cut the long story short. managed to purchase it finally. and wow... one helluva expensive. small device but cost me over s$160!

mental health

mum's mental health has deteriorated significantly over the last 2 months. nowadays, she can forget about things that happened just minutes ago and also, she can ask me things repeatedly up to 4-5 times within half an hour without realizing it. can be rather irritating if i do not know of her condition, which is related to old age. here's a few examples that reflect her deterioration.

i have been keeping close supervision of her these 2 months since i am not working. and lately, i was also extra careful about the stuff she ate given her recent bouts of flu and hospitalizations. added to that, she had her birthday celebrations makan, which was done over several evenings. despite all these, she told me she was kept hungry and did not have a full meal. initially, i thought she was indeed hungry and gave her more food, but it came to a point where i think it is not true and that what she said is probably not to be taken seriously. just take yesterday for example, she had a mug of warm barley drink for breakfast, had mee sua (twice the normal serving) for lunch, rojak and another mug of barley for afternoon tea, and for dinner... hmmm, she had satay, chicken wings, zichar dinner and another mug of warm barley... and after dinner, when she was already struggling with space in her stomach, she down another slice of birthday cake... and on our way home, she told me that despite all the food and drinks, she did not pee the whole day. and that was unusual.

this morning, when she woke up, she complained that she had had a bad night and that she had wounds at her buttocks. and that her wounds was so bad the wound discharge wetted the bed. feeling suspicious, i went to check on her "wounds" and found no wounds there. instead, there was a little redness. my conclusions is that she had sat too long in the wheelchair. as for her so called wound discharge, my inspection of the bed revealed that she had peed onto the mattress. it was so wet, 3/4 of the bedsheet was soaked with her urine. once again, she complained and pondered (yes, she could actually pondered, then complained) that she was ill becos of the prawn she ate. that the 2-3 small sized prawns made her aggravated her wounds. and as she spoked, she changed her conclusion that the barley drinks had made her sick, and even before she could conclude this, she affirmed her own "suspicion" by iterating that my brother's mil said her legs were swollen...

challenging person. i reminded her that i ate everything she ate and i was not sick. and i asked her to take a look at her legs to check if it was swollen. no, she said, and i told her that she felt this way becos she had gorged herself sick. and she swore blind that she was left hungry yesterday. and for that matter, hungry for many days. and added that she dare not say it becos i was unemployed. omg! this is a very challenging mum indeed. i held my breath and thought about it, and it struck me that the behaviour she had displayed was no different from many cases of dementia patient... and i cooled down.

and i left it as it was. my mum is slowly being reduced to someone i do not recognize anymore. her forgetfulness is creating all sorts of unnecessary tensions on me. for a start, i will stop responding to her repeated asking for food, or at most, give a small portion. if not, she will eat till she explode and still, she'll say she's hungry. just need to manage. just need to manage. and as some of my friends said. it is probably being arranged by someone up there for me to be unemployed currently so that i can look after her.

jack'd off

i finally jack'd myself off. i mean, deleted the app.

i did it two days back. frankly, it was quite exciting to have the app initially. it allowed me to kaypoh (be a busybody, by the way i did not know this term originated from the hokkien dialect and that it meant "chicken auntie"! lol!) a bit and to know if there are any gay persons near me. and i certainly have met quite a few interesting people through time. but there is only so much one can get out of these applications (including grindr). i got bored of it. the people around me that appeared in the app were almost always the same. haha... so, yup, i deleted it. just like what i did to grindr less than a week after i downloaded it.

so... yup, for me, i've jack'd off...

:-)

ps: and as to whether i will download it again, i supposed i will... when i get bored and got nothing to do. but yup, not anytime soon.

bee's down

last month, my brother got sick, then he spreaded  his flu bug to my niece, and from my niece, my mum  and i got it, and now, bee is down... i am not sure if it is me, but well, he is down now. totally out of action. and we cannot get close cos we need to be a bit more careful. cannot risk getting mum infected again.

sighs... let's hope he gets well soon.

noisy sapphie

had an almost sleepless night last night... and it was becos of sapphie...

can you believe this? she had dreams through the night and constantly yelp. yes, dogs do dream. and when they dream, they do have sandman making magic for them. and yes yes yes, they do make one helluva lot of noise when they dream...

and she went, yelp, yelp, yelp, ooo, ooo, ooo, yelp, yelp, yelp... non-stop. and as she yelped and oooed, her paws and hind-legs twitched... it was actually quite a sight. but for me, i was like - aarrrggghhhh, stop it! i wanna sleep!

lol!

mum's 80!

mum turned 80 today (or yesterday since the clock had gone pass midnight).

and to make her day memorable, i made her 长寿 mee sua (aka long life rice noodles). interestingly, when i told her i wanted to make mee sua for her, she got all excited. and she reminded me that i should get those loose ones rather than those in packs. on top of that, she reminded me that it must be mee sua. cannot be anything else. well, you see, for hokkiens (my dialect group), it is customary for us to have mee sua for birthdays. and when i cooked it, reminded me not to break the strands! haha! the longer it is, the longer life she will enjoy... at least this was what the older generation believe in. and that was what i did. i simply drop the whole 2 bundles for her. and i also noticed. as she ate, she kept holding it up to see how long the strands were! lol! but well, i could see she was very happy about it. but that was not all. i got her the shou tao (longevity peach) too. and that was to be offered to the gods for blessing her with long life (according to chinese, once we hit 80, one could be considered to be "hao ming" or "good life")... simple gestures, but i knew it meant a lot to her. and to top it all off, i brought her to my brother's place and we went out for a birthday dinner followed by a simple cutting of a birthday cake for her.

happy 80th birthday mum!

gay chats

usually when i got into any sites that has a chat function, one of the first thing i do is to switch off the chat. and when i forget to do so, i get rather irritated with people sending me messages such as:

"hi hi... seeking?"
"hi hi... intro? what you into?"
"hi hi... 23, chn, 170, 6, flex. u?"

yup, you got the idea... it's about sex! just find it very demeaning. no? i mean, what happened to the good old fashioned self-intro and gentlemanly chats... but of cos, i do admit i have done it before... and that was oh, such a long time back! and oh, chatroom sex is so tiring... imagine this, one hand typing and the other hand pumping away. so weird right? then again, for me during the once of twice i tried, it was two hands typing, and simply entertaining the other party...

lol!

ps: and oh, i totally wouldn't mind chatting with mr gay canada 2011!

blah day

it was a super blah day for me today... and it was all due to mum. she went mental again this morning... arghhh... in fact she had been bordering between normal and mental these 2 days. and i noticed this trend, she would be ok in the afternoon till evening till she goes to bed. but when she wakes up, that's is... she will either have her moods, or she will complain of pains at the usual places, and she will also cough, get breathless, etc... and when she gets into such state, it is actually very difficult to manage her. and today, she said something that i feared most - she said her sickness must be due to someone casting some evil spells on her...

got me super upset. i was afraid of this cos that was what she said of the domestic help and my sis-in-law previously that resulted in a lot on family tensions. and in recent times, she also started imagining that bee's mum (whom she has never met), is out to harm her "becos she in the her way of taking over my property and money". so, when she started to associate her sickness (which was due to copd) to evil spells, i didn't take it too well. last thing i hope was for her to start suspecting bee, or me for that matter, for doing such things (not that we can or we believe is possible). but well... and to make things worst, she went into this mood swings and insisted on going to the taoist temple... got me all upset cos taoist temples are very smoky due to the joss sticks and she had been warned against exposing herself to places that would jeopardize her breathing... anyway...

ok, enough of rantings... in all, it was a blah day for me.

glad it is over.

blog viewership

nov 12 went down as the record viewership for my blog in a particular month... actually, when i hit more than 10700 hits in oct 12, i thought that was it... but this morning when i took a look, omg, the number actually surpassed oct 12's figure! and bee said, it was due to my frequent clicking (to chalk up hits), which is not true and totally not the case cos i set my blog stats to ignore my visits...

:-)

header look

i decided to change to my blog header two days ago. if i recall correctly, this should be the 4th time i change the header. the astroboy picture had been there for a long while and i thought it would be nice to retire it and to give the blog a little facelift. and i decided to replace it with sandman aka sandy. well, as to why astroboy, it was becos i really loved this character. it featured quite significantly in my life when i was a boy. also, it is a character that many (if not all) gay man here love and can identify with!

and as for why sandy... well, there was no major reason per se. frankly, i do not know this character until i watched the movie "rise of the guardian" recently. but in that short 2 hours, i found myself liking sandy for its mild character despite its power. and of cos, i thought it was a little gay... lol! so... yup, here it is, sandy to grace my blog header until the next change...

consolidating 2012

it's the time of the year to start thinking about my year-end summary posting. it has been a routine for me to write a summary and to post in on the 31 dec each year. other than consolidating the things that happened, i need to think of the descriptor for the year. interestingly, this thought crossed my mind recently - if i were to do this on a yearly basis, wouldn't i be rather passive approach to my year? perhaps i should take on a more proactive approach, identify how i want the year to be described and chart the big items at the start of the year? haha... this actually brings me back to having a new year resolution, something that i have avoided doing for the longest time... nonetheless, let's consolidate what happened this year first. let's see...

family
- signs of mum's health deteriorating, in particular, her mental health. on top of that, with regards her copd, it deteriorated towards the end of the year where she had to be hospitalized a few times
- niece has grown up nice and well and we should have a new addition by the end of the year. this would be a very significant inclusion cos it will be the first boy of the next generation.
- have the opportunity to spend a good last 3 months with mum since i resigned from my job

work
- very intensive pace and took up almost all my commitments up to the middle of the year
- resigned from my job following a series of regretful incidences and negative experiences with bosses
- likely to be still looking for a job by the end of the year

self
- health took an interesting downturn at the start of the year where i was hospitalized for kidney stones
- otherwise, health was somewhat stable although there were signs of deterioration of my spine towards the end of the year
- re-started my chiropractor treatment in aug and chirporactor identified the worsening of the spine health, x ray also indicated the misalignment of the cervical vertebra all the way down to the t2-t3 joint

bee
- into our 8th year, very stable
- we stopped living with me in view of mum's mental condition, the demise of his dad and the fact that he has a new flat of his own now

friends
- friends continue to come and go. i supposed i can consider this normal and routine, so, there is really  nothing new.

these are some of the few points. i think due to recency effect, the items listed here are really few and insignificant. and i need an anchor theme for the year. these are some few descriptors that i think could possibly be used to describe 2012. these include possibly, "mum" (to depict the significant role she played in influencing all aspects of my life), "learning" (to depict the enormous amount of things i learned this year), hmmm...

will need to reflect and consolidate further.

:-)

over-70/ month

oh my... this is the first time in my blogging history to have pass 70 posts per month... and that works out to more than 2 posts per day. and based on current numbers, i will surpass 500 posts for the whole of the year and possibly break the 557 posts i blogged for the whole of 2008. and interestingly, the year 2008 was also the year where i left service and was unemployed for a couple of months... haha... must be a case of being too free and thus have the time to blog.

religion & i - part 2

this is a delayed post on the topic (which i had promised tah chuan) and it is also one of the most difficult in my recent postings. difficult as it took a while to synthesize the many things that i had in my head of this lifelong journey of mine. but well, here goes...

in my post about "religion & i, part 1" some time back, i reflected on my younger years where i was exposed to the different religions in singapore. my earliest memory of race/ religion was not quite a positive one, given the rawness of the interracial riots that occurred in the 60s where chinese and malay relations where somewhat tense due to the political tensions between the chinese-dominated ruling party in singapore and the malay-dominated ruling parties in malaysia (singapore was, until 1965, a part of the federation of malaysia). and i suspect, also contributed in part by remaining race/ religion tensions between muslims and catholics after the maria hertogh riots in the early-50s. i remembered vaguely (and i think i was about 3-4 years old), during one warm evening, when my mum hurriedly pushed me under the dining table to hide as she said malays were killing chinese in tai seng (a kampong about 2-3km away from my kampong) and that they were killing their way to my kampong. thankfully, it never happened. that was the rather unfortunate incident that i remembered of my young(er) years with regards racial/ religious tensions. i supposed following the series of interracial and religious clashes, the efforts by the government and community-based groups led to a rather peaceful society insofar as race/ religion are concerned. and that the peaceful social tapestry that comprised a mix of race, and religion very much shaped my rather open attitudes towards the various religions here. and up to my mid-teens, my affiliation to my faith then was very much based on the rituals and beliefs of my parents, specifically, my mum. in another words, and more bluntly, blind faith, one that is based more on the comforts of the familiarity of traditions and practices that i had grown comfortable with through my formative years.

my journey towards eventual alignment to buddhism could be explained in 2 major stages, namely, my curiosity and sense-making, and my eventual alignment and closure to my search and deeper understanding of a religion and one that i could identify and live with. and there were one key principle that shaped my journey - logic. and my physical experience of life and my logic grounding during my school years influenced my process of finding a religion that i could align myself to.

my curiosity and sense-making of religions began during my teenage years, and lasted till my late-20s. that was a stage of my life where, apart from focusing of studies, i went through a process of searching for answers and reconciling my readings with what i was experiencing in real life. and in a way, it was also about my search for the meaning of life in general. i started reading up on the different major religions, about christianity, islam, buddhism, etc. i read through the bible, read up snippets of the qur'an, the dhammapada, etc. frankly, i must admit, i enjoyed reading the bible a lot cos it is written in a story-like manner and that many characters and stories came across as rather magical. but i couldn't say the same about the dhammapada. it was rather difficult to read and that many lines written seemed rather poetic and deep. but, being a logical person that i was (and still am), i questioned a lot about the stories in the bible (and the qur'an). i did not agree to how certain stories could possibly happened. how could shadows be created before light, how could man arise from adam and eve, how could there be a huge flood, how could god create man, why must man fear god, if god created man, who create god... this was the same tensions i had with taoist stories... how could there be a talking monkey, much less, a monkey god that came from a stone, how could there be gods that could stand and fly on clouds, how could there be half-animal half-human creatures that speak mandarin... the list went on. also, i tried to find out about the meanings behind the different practices of the religions. and when i placed the cultural context behind all the different practices, the symbolism behind each and every religion certainly made a lot of sense. the insights i got from the deeper understanding of the different religious practices and how it is closely linked to their cultures helped deepened my understanding of the different races in asia through time. despite this, my tensions with regards the origins and stories depicted by the different religions remained. and whenever someone tried to convince me about the "superiority" of their religion and tried to convert me, i would try to counter their baseless claim of superiority by mentioning these "illogical" stories. reflecting, i was a little confrontational and somewhat defensive. but till i could find logic in any specific religion, i would stick to my taoist-buddhist brand of religion.

and it was with this mentality that buddhism is the best of the worst options that i had wanted to take refuge for the longest time. was i influenced from the fact that my mum had taken her refuge years ago? perhaps. nonetheless, i am not sure when it happened, but eventually, i found myself aligning my belief towards buddhism wholeheartedly. not the taoist-buddhist brand of religion that i grew up with. and i supposed this happened not by accident. in fact, i would say, this happened as i mature. i began to understand that stories captured in the many of the religious text should not be read literally. there was a need to understand that concepts such as god, heaven, devil, and the depictions of these concepts took various forms depending on many factors including culture, politics, language, etc. and with this understanding, i began to see and interpret the different religious text in a whole new light. and i was able to reconcile the differences between science (logic) and religion (belief) for many, if not most of the religious text. and of course, these begged the next question, if so, why buddhism. the answer lie in the facts that buddhism is probably the only philosophy that tells its believers to constantly question its teachings and one should feel free not to believe in it if one finds it illogical. it tells people that they should not be dogmatic about its teachings and worst, follow it blindly. instead, it tells its people to challenge its teachings as one searches for the truth, and once there is a deeper understanding of the truth, one should internalize it and practice it well. also, it tells its believers that if one wants to release oneself of all attachments (to attain enlightenment), one should eventually also rid oneself of the attachment to the buddhist teachings. to me, no one religion is confident enough to do this. most religions that i know of try to convert people based on fear, preaches absolute faith in a particular god and that one should never question him and his teachings. i had one of the happiest moment of my life when i eventually registered for refuge-taking and i went through the ceremony eventually in aug 9 2009.

significantly, in my search for a belief system that i can subscribe to and live with, i came almost one big round. but it was a journey well taken as i learned many things about belief systems and how it impact and improve people. some of the key lessons i took away conclude firstly, that the journey is a very personal one. no one should ever impose or force his or her belief onto another for when a person is ready, the faith will call on him or her. to impose and force a person into one faith is wrong. and to do so when one is dying is most unethical. secondly, regardless of religion, all faiths preach the fundamental values of love, compassion and respect for each other, despite the differences in the actions and practices. thus, it is not about what religion or faith one believes in as long as one practice the good teachings and live a morally upright life. and thirdly, if we want to achieve world peace (why do i sound like i am in a beauty pageant now!), a good start would be to recognize and celebrate the common values of these good rather than fight over whose practice is more right or superior than the other (which will be never-ending), and to recognize that god is in one's heart and not somewhere outside oneself...

tree smells

recently, i have been smelling this dense, rancid smelling scent every evenings around my condo and surrounding areas. and the smell was so rancid and pungent that i felt very uneasy. i mentioned it to my mum in passing one evening as we drove out for dinner and was surprised by her strong reaction. don't talk about it when you smell something in the evening hours! she chided me... my father (my ah gong aka granddad) used to tell me that it is not good. you never know what kind of things the smell come from...

but really, other than her suspicion, i was so sure there was a logical explanation to it. but i couldn't figure out what this smell is and where is originated from.  but i suspected it is from some roadside plants/ trees although i didn't know exactly which one. and so i posted a status update in my facebook. i took botany as an undergrad and was so certain some of my friends would be able to answer me... and within minutes, one posting came in... she said it could be the pulai tree (alstonia spp). i did some checks in the net on how it looked like and drove around my estate and the changi business park where there are lots of trees... and lo and behold. indeed there were quite a few of the alstonia spp. and they were all in full bloom!

heh heh... i don't think there is a need to tell my mum about it. no point trying to change the mindset of a person who has this thing about spirits and smells ingrained into her since she was a kid...
