just 4 factors... and we have 16 permutations. imagine the permutations of greys if we include other factors such as dress, talk, think, sexual organs (possess one or both), la la la... and of cos there is another totally 100% set of permutations possible when we include the perspective of `perceived as'. this is indeed a very grey world! or rather, this is a very colourful world. yet the rules defined so clearly in the monotones of the two extreme characteristics of those in the first and last line... sad!

coming out, growing up

what coming out is to me
i came out in 1996. aug 1996 to be exact. but really, what is coming out? to some people (or most people i know), it is about telling the whole world you are gay. but for me, coming out is about self acceptance. it is about accepting one's own sexuality. accepting that one needs to take control of his / her life as a gay person and no longer needs to hide oneself behind a veil of denial. it does not need to mean announcing to people out there that one is gay. and by this definition, one can come out and yet not openly announce to the world about his/ her sexuality. it's rather interesting that as i type this, i recall one particular incident whereby i was chided by dominic (my ex's best friend) for not being open about my sexuality despite telling him i have come out. to him, it is people like me who does great injustice to gays for not standing up and fighting for our rights!... thinking back, i think he was totally confused between coming out and being an activist. i can be gay and yet not be an activist... hmmm, ok, back to my topic. decided to name this entry `coming out, growing up' in contrast to my previous `growing up, coming out'. i want to write about my life as a gay man after coming out. i want to write about my views about being gay and growing up as a gay man after coming out.

the second birth
as mentioned, i came out in 1996. that, i would term - my second birth. that was the year i was reborn. i had, prior to that, spent a large amount of time denying my own sexuality and convincing myself about my `straightness'. my coming out process was traumatic yet it happened so naturally. i was literally smittened by someone i met at the beach. it was infatuation to the highest degree. i did things i had never done before. i introduced myself using my real name (yup, using pseudonyms are common in the gay circle). i gave him my pager number (yes, those were the days). he literally dragged me out of my closet. he invited me out for dinner with his friends. he told his friends about what i did for a living (i was a regular army officer), what my hobbies were, where i lived,... literally everything about me. truthfully. yup, i was so so inside my closet that i had an alternative identity that i'd use to unknown gay men. men whom i had anonymous sex with. encounters and acts that satisfy my sexual needs ("hunger" or "lust" would probably be more appropriate actually... lol!) yet hiding my own sexuality. it was an intense period of nothing but just sex, sex, sex and more sex. but it felt empty, physically very satisfying but totally empty at the emotional-level. it was self-destructive to a certain extend. until this person came along. chong.

weeks passed after knowing chong and being introduced as the real me to his friends. when things did not fall apart after telling gaymen about myself, i began to realize that i had all along been living in a make belief world. a world that i had imagined to be so so bad that it would destroy me, destroy my family, destroy everything that i had known for my last 30 years. that i was still who i was, told me that hey, it was time for me to start accepting myself. but things did not work out between chong and i. it was one-sided from the start. it was a difficult period and my life was punctuated by suicide attempts. i lost more than 10% of my body weight. my body was at the point of breaking down. i had gone in and out of depression. i kept pestering chong to consider a relationship. i ended up monitoring his every moves, well, not to the extend of stalking him. then it happened. chong gave me the cold turkey treatment. he disappeared altogether. that was when i had no choice but to slowly creep out of my hole. heading back into the closet was no longer an option. i had been "exposed" or rather, i had learned to accept myself as a gay person. i had come out. and so, i started to pull myself together. that was when i decided that if there was anyone who could help me was myself. that was my difficult birth as a gay person. that process took me about 3-4 months.

1997, i attended a one-year course in safti. my first couple of months was a total screw up. it cost me my top 10% eventually. but it didn't matter to me. i was too consumed about my life and my growing up as a gay person. i was like a sponge, learning about how things are like as a gay person. and i continued my frequent visits to popular haunts where gaymen would hang out. fort road, katong park, flyovers, tanjong pagar, club street etc. and i had my first experience of the poppers. so, yes… the years after coming out was intense. lots of learning, lots of experimenting, lots of experiencing.

growing up, relationships
after coming out, what were my initial thoughts about gay relationships? my first gay `relationship' with another man was with my classmate during my uni days. and i placed the word relationship in parenthesis becos i had not come out then. it was something that was very sexual and very intense. but interestingly, given the fact that we both deny our homosexuality (or for him, bisexuality), we continuously convinced ourselves that what we did was `just a phase' in life and that we were `normal' (defined in terms of being able to have sex with woman - ie heterosexual). it was weird. but when he wanted more and to become a couple `officially', i freaked out. i started ignoring him. that was how i manage relationship realities. i'd run away. it hurt him lots. we stopped talking and it was not till early 2003/4 (after more than 18 years) that we spoke again.

anyway, back to the topic of relationships after coming out. as a young gay man, i totally did not believe that lasting gay relationships was possible. from what i saw amongst my friends, gay men getting together would break after a short span of time. for some, days, for some, weeks and for some, months. and amongst some of my friends, anything more than a couple of months would be considered a record and to be celebrated. and becos of that, i did not even bother to try. encounters with men tend to be more of `on a friend' basis. but as time pass and i got my comfortable with my gay-self, i wanted more. i started to want a relationship. but people i liked did not like me and people i did not think i could have a relationship with fell head over heels over me. that was where i hurt people i really cared for. was in a situation where i wanted relationships yet felt jaded. i shan't mention their names here for i don't think it is fair to divulge such details publicly without asking them. but suffice to say that of these few, there are some that i still keep in very close contact with and where we would still wish each other happy anniversaries to commemorate out friendship. and there were also some whom i would totally like to just ignore for they hurt me double bad. also, there were people who made use of me. there was this person who made me buy holidays for him, get their projects at work done and then turn around and accused me of stalking them once their projects were done. and of cos there were those whom i dated, and whom i had rather intense feelings for and then suddenly disappeared, etc... and it was these people who made me more and more jaded. thinking back, i realized that the people that had crossed my life and had given my so much pains (and joys of cos) were also trying very hard to manage their own sexuality. there was nothing rite or wrong about it. it just happened. until 1999.

amos came along. that was 28 feb 1999. met him after my run, and he after his gym at the national stadium gym. the feelings were mutual. and we hit it off very well from the very start. but things did not last becos he kept harping on the fact that his kidney pains and all sorts of other pains becos god (yes, he was a christian) was punishing him for being gay. and in the end, he told me he had to let me go and be a good christian. we ended our courtship on 18 may 1999. hmmm, he tried to come back to me 5 months later, but i was with james already by then. and the last time i saw him on the streets, i thought he was real campy! well, that would be another story. and it was two weeks later that i decided to get together with james. the rest was history. and today, i stand corrected. lasting gay relationships is possible. i have come across many many examples as my circle of gay friends expand over the years. for that matter, my cousin had been with his partner for more than 20 years!

growing up, gay sex
after coming out, what were my thoughts about gay sex? well, for sex specifically, i was aware of the reproductive aspects of it as well as how it can be enjoyed by people. nonetheless, the topic of sex was considered very private and taboo and thus, it was hardly spoken of amongst people. and to me back then, the only sex act possible was the act of intercourse between a man and a woman. ya, thinking back, i could only say, i was really naive and stupid. but i did not have any reference or anybody to talk to. and the only information i could find about sex then was from straight porn. porn magazines circulated by my secondary schools class girls! so, you can imagine how confused i was to find it so natural and be able to enjoy sex with men when i was in sec 2. my experiences was nothing more than mutual masturbation. and the first time i saw a man being penetrated by another, i freaked out. i even had nightmare that very night. in my dream, the scene replayed itself and the policemen came and arrested everyone in my dream! i woke up in cold sweat.

over the years, as i visited different places overseas, with the spread of internet and information, i began to learn that the rules of sex amongst gay men are very much different from that of heterosexuals. and for that matter, i learned that sex amongst straight people can be as varied as one could possibly imagine. and my attitude towards what many conservatives would consider perverse began to change. i began to see many of these acts as personal choices of people in their bedroom. sadomasochism, leather, rubber, latex, underwears, and so on. just name it. i had previously thought people engaging in such acts as lowly creatures and ought to be avoided and despised. the common branding of these people in the main media did not help. but i have since broken away from such mindsets. who am i to decide what works or what does not work for them. how they live their private lives has nothing to do with me much as i expect people to not decide how i live my own life. and for that matter, over time, i have slowly come to accept and even tried some of them out of curiosity of it but decided that these are not for me.

but of course, i have my limits, sex must be consensual and should not involve acts against the wishes of the individuals, sex with children (paedophilia) remains a no no thing. same goes for sex with animals (bestialism), sex with carcasses (necrophilia) and so on. these are still no no for me. it will never be. it goes beyond logic of natural behaviour.

growing up, self-love
but what i felt was the one most single important thing about coming out and accepting oneself as gay is - self-love. too often we have given in to pressure, been wired to believe there is only one norm - straight conservative norms - and tried to live out our lives according these so called `social norms'. and where we did not fit in, we end up with self-doubt, self-blame, low self-esteem, no or low self-confidence and so on... or worst still, despising ourselves and at times inflicting pains on ourselves. it can be very destructive. and that was why i believe many older generation gay men ended up in mental hospitals. it is not because of their being gay, it was because of the pressures that society had placed onto these people to conform that made them this way. i think i am lucky to be able to live in this age where things are generally more accepting and where information and social support is increasingly available. of cos, things are still not ideal and there are still a lot of wrong perceptions and discrimination against gay men. but i certainly believe it is moving in the right direction. personally, my coming out to myself is one of the most important thing that i have done in my life. if i have the chance to live my life all over again, i'd probably come out earlier. then again, there is no point looking back. life's like that, when one looks back and sulk too often, one will fail to appreciate and shape his present and in time to come, he will regret again.

think i have written quite a fair bit. i have chosen to focus on myself. not my family, not my friends, not my work as in my previous post. ok, will stop here.

eating with hands

yesterday, schneider bought dinner for bee bee and i. we decided to try out the peranakan (straits-born chinese) restaurant near his workplace. and so, we headed there after his work.

nice little place. and as per lots of restaurants in singapore, i noted it was staffed by mainland chinese... really made me think about the meaning of `authenticity' of the food served. well, the place had these pictures of old singapore and we spent lots of time talking about them - national theatre, north bridge road, majestic theatre, singapore river, la la la. and of cos, the usual pictures of old baba families, tok panjang, and so on. such memories and such good conversation piece.

before we ate, i also shared how i would use my hands instead of fork and spoons when i was young and whenever i eat peranakan food (i still do the same when i eat with larry these days). eating with hands help bring out the taste if you know what i mean. and the food was served. it did not have the tip top restaurant quality / authenticity in terms of taste but it was good nonetheless. it had been a long while since i last ate peranakan food! yumz! ngoh hiang, chap chye, ikan masak assam pedas, ayam buah keluak, bakwan kepiting... for that moment i almost also wanted to order fish head curry, itek sio, kangkong belachan... but decided that it would be too much!

nice dinner, nice company. and as per always, our meals ended very very fast... gobble gobble gobble and the dinner for 3 ended in less than half hour! ha ha! promised schneider i'll bring him to one of my favourite peranakan restaurant next month. a quaint little place along frankel avenue. long time back, the waitress even wore kebaya to serve us... not anymore.

:-)

ps: and it was interesting to see pictures of ministers eating with their hands in the papers today!

sentosa

the weather has been one helluva terrible these couple of weeks. sweltering heat, high humidity, slight haze (damn it! again!) and so on. it's like constantly being in a sauna. and when you go to the swimming pool, the water is literally hot! wtf! it's like going for hydrotherapy.

then again, it presents beautiful opportunities for sun worshipers like me. cannot get enough of my vit d! time to head to the pool or to the beach for a tan! and that is exactly what i'll be doing today. will be heading to sentosa with damien and edwin for a tan cum picnic (cum as in `and' not `cum picnic' eeewwwwww)! ha ha! and i think they are both rather excited about it too. there'll be sandwiches, different flavoured tuna chunks, potato chips, peanut butter, drinks, fruits, la la la... think we'll end up gorging outselves!

ha!

my boss in sia cargo

recently i noted a couple of searches for "chong hoi peng, sia" that led people to my blog. it was interesting to note this and i half suspect people must have been so pissed off with her to want to find out more about her. well, i do not like to criticize people but certainly i had my worst working experience in my life under her. here's the story:

i worked for sia cargo from 2000 - 2001. it was a very good learning experience for me for i saw a lot of things. i left that place convinced that sia is nice and beautiful on the outside but inside, there are things that do not really augur well for the company. things that had been "encultured" and that in the long time, if not eradicated, will become a cancer tumor and that will eventually destroy the company's productivity or slow down it's growth.

for example, i see people coming to office, do nothing, sleep at their table and wait for the end of the day. these are the people who had stayed with the company for over 20 years and waiting for their 25 years so that they can get lifetime benefits. and the company managers did nothing about it. and the reason why they did not do anything about it was becos they might get into trouble with the union. also, i noticed many would spend hours chatting and talking. politicking was a prevalent and major preoccupations of many in the company. lastly, there was a lot of mind sets. the people inside had very strong mindsets and totally resistant to change/ criticisms. of cos on the bright side, i think the company was able to move due to a few very good people. people, that certainly my boss then did not belong to. i am not sure what the company is like now. but that was my experience back then.

when i joined them, there was this saying - "if you stay with sia for 5 years, you will be accepted as part of them and will likely stay with them for life". so, when i joined them, i was considered a mid-streamer, someone who had parachuted into the system. and to those in the system, i was perceived as a threat. unluckily, i guessed i was perceived as a threat by none other than my own manager. yes, she is none other than this lady called "chong hoi peng". and so i was time and again picked on and every little thing i did or did not do was scrutinized and mistakes amplified and announced publicly. it's almost like the way public shaming was done during the cultural revolution period. only that i did not need to wear a signboard announcing my `crime'. going to work on time and leaving on time was taken as an attitude problem. to me, i see it as an efficiency issue. i was still able to deliver the results, i was still able to generate the revenues needed. yet, becos i left on time, i was picked on again and again. there was never a time where i did not get any chiding or scolding when i walk into her office. even if it was going into her office to ask for advise. and i decided i had enough of her nonsense one year later when i briefed her about my road show schedule.

you see, in order to save the company money and time, i decided to do my road show in taiwan and hong kong on thur, fri and sat. fly to states via hong kong on sun and arrive in san francisco for my united states series of road shows that cover san franscisco, los angeles and new york. that means i will have one day rest in states on sunday before starting my show on monday and returning on wed. 7 days to cover 5 major cities. this to me was rather demanding given the many distributors and station managers that i had to meet and the processes that i have to audit. when i went to see her to brief her on my schedule and areas that i will cover, little did i expect to get a scolding me and her accusing me of trying to take advantage of the company's time and money for personal enjoyment. wtf! and becos of this she went on to scrutinize my itinerary hour by hour as to where i will be, who i will meet, where i will stay, when i will fly from point to point. she cannot find any fault with it. but then again, she demanded that i come back to singapore to spend my sunday before i head to states again on monday! hmmmm, no logic. penny wise but totally pound foolish. it was crazy.

i decided enough was enough. i left the company. i continued to keep in contact with my staff after i left. interestingly enough my staff shared with me that i was one of the very few who served more than a couple of months under her. in fact, my lasting for a years was the longest. and from 2001 to 2004. i understand that she had a turn over of more than 5-8 staff under her. the shortest being less than a month. and things got so back that the company president had to call her up and give her a warning about the high staff turn over.

but of cos, all said and done, she worked very hard. very thrifty and would eat sandwiches when she goes overseas in order to minimize her spending. and for that matter, chide people traveling with her when they eat anything she felt was expensive. but she is a very very lousy leader. so lousy that one could actually improve when one learn wat not to do using her as an example. the armed forces has this concept called "leadership by example". but she is the perfect example of negative demonstration where "leadership by example" is concerned. and from that perspective, i must really say i have learned a lot a lot from her. learned wat not to do, wat kills staff's motivation, wat leadership is not about... and i am very sure i have walked out of the company a very much better person.

ya it's true.

encounters @ pool

t'was an interesting day. went to the pool to catch a tan in pm. met raymond. managed to catch up quite a bit. and then picked bee from his work place... had a quick late afternoon / early dinner. and then we decide to meet up with jeremy. introduced jeremy to bee.

they got along rather well! anyway, after dropping bee off, i decided to head to the pool for a swim before heading for home. boy, the water was literally hot! terrible. left the pool after a couple of laps and then in the showers, met tai! been a long while and didn't manage to keep in contact after i lost my phone late last year. well, it felt good to be able to chat with him. left not long after. as i walked out of the shower, i saw my cousin sitting by the pool chair in his swimming trunks. oops! freaked me out. quickly, i covered my face with my towel, pretended to wipe my ears and left hurriedly. the last thing i want was to have to speak to him. altho we are cousins, there is really nothing much that we can talk about. he's the type who likes to brag about his wealth and i find it totally difficult to talk to such people...

and as i walked out of the pool, 2 ladies walked passed me. one rather tall, the other normal height. both spoke a language that i could not understand but i guessed it was shanghainese. i didn't bother and made my way to the car. next thing i knew, my cousin walked out with one of the shanghainese lady! argh!!! and to make things worst, the car parked beside mine was my cousins'! and so, before he even saw me, i jumped into my car, ducked and pretended to pick stuff up from my floor mat. i stayed in that position for a good 5min before he drove off!

whew! close shave! and from the look of their behaviour, it was obvious that the lady was my cousins' mistress! hmmm, then again, thinking of it, i was not surprised cos he had all along been bragging to us that it is very easy to get a mistress from china... only thing that made me a little sad was that his wife, my cousin-in-law is down with parkinsons and had been very weak. and that his children are just about uni going age.

sighs... let's hope we don't see drama downstream...

bad habits

i so dislike being called to go back to work when i am on off or on leave. just received an sms from a colleague asking me if i could go back to work tomorrow cos according to him my boss wants to go thru the minutes i wrote. isn't this sick?

anyway, i smsed back to tell him i will call my boss myself and clarify and he reverted to say that i need not to call my boss and that he'll settle with him instead. hmm, i sense someone trying hard to please my boss at my expense! argh! anyway, even if i call my boss, i'll still tell him i have plans whole day (which indeed i have) and that i will see him only on monday pm.

dislike such organisational culture. organisational bad habits. and it is prevalent in my set-up. always rushing. and often, rushing to wait. sheeze!

wtf!

(afternote: called my boss and managed to arrange the meeting on monday pm! just proofed my point that my colleague was trying to pull a fast one!)

break

am on off these two days. thought i'd better claim it before i run out of opportunities to claim it (due to excess leave). well, of cos, i have not reached that state of affairs yet. and it's nice to be able to take a break from work during weekdays and do nothing and just stay at home. do housework, watch tv, do laundry, sweep the floor, mop the floor, read a book, play with dog... whatever...

:-)

ps: taking off days from work used to be perceived as `bad attitude'. to do more is to be expected when one is in senior positions. that was my thinking too and i would not claim my off-in-lieus even if i work on weekends or public holidays. but today, i think it is stupid and pure rubbish! if you don't take, no one will say you have good attitude towards work. conversely, people may even think quietly that you are just plain stupid and on the wrong ball! and i think so too!

medical check

went for my routine check up again today. the doctor is a new one. recommended and referred by kl after he changed his job in apr. this one looked a little stern initially but after realizing i am a personal friend of kl, he kinda open up. anyway, i got my cholesterol medicine top up. also, made an appointment with the urologist to check why i had blood in my urine. the appointment date is in mid jul.

last minutes

completed the minutes writing today... 9 pages. and when i finished and sent it out for comments, i realized - this is the last minutes that i will be writing for my current job...

blah

this is one of those day when everything felt wrong. started with bee telling me he needs to work and cannot have breakfast. then just before i left for breakfast, i received an sms telling me that one of my ex-colleague had died. felt a little off. i just spoken to him not too long ago. a fatherly figure. sighs. left my home for breakfast. at the car park, faced a dead car - battery flat. gave up and came home. decided to do housework. whole house full of sapphie's fur (well, nothing new, but to find it all over the place after mopping the house clean yesterday was a bit much). arghhh! and when i kept the laundry, i found a totally messed up cabinet! and i had to totally drag everything out and refold all the clothes! arghhh arghhh! i just so hate messed up cabinets! shirts and shorts all mixed up. underwear from bottom pulled out and everything on top toppled, and shorts becoming unfolded... and for those clothes that need to be hung in the closet, i found the place totally messed up too! bags and bags of old clothes thrown onto the floor! arghhh arghhh arghhh!

kok came, we went to eat a quick breakfast and then me off to change the car battery. of cos the change of a new battery did lighten up things a bit. but then my mum called to chase me about sending her to temple earlier (after asking me to fetch her at 2pm)! arghhh x 4!!! rushed down to her place to pick her up. on the way, another colleague called up. had earlier asked her to help pay the pek kim. instead, she told me she won't be attending the wake. she'll be undergoing day op for a lump at her breast. possibly breast cancer. now already face totally black and damned freaking foul mood... by the time i came home, it was already 5plus... and i realized sapphie sprained her hind legs... arghhh x 5!!! and got an email from another friend telling me that he cannot go for the bangkok trip in mid jul as earlier discussed due to work. and that means, the trip is off...

i feel so tired and drained now. totally no mood to do anything. but of cos, i need to iron my work clothes before i rest for the night.

wtf!!!

changed battery

battery died twice, latest being this morning. went to the shop and asked for an assessment of my battery health. the lady came out, took some equipment, asked me to start my car, clipped the equipment onto my car battery and walked in. next thing i knew, the attendant came out with a new battery, changed it and once done, told me i could leave. no charges. battery is still under warranty.

:-)

stressful

i find being disorganised and untidy highly stressful. disorganised house, disorganised room, disorganised cabinet, la la la. apart from practical reasons of not wasting time when one needs to look for things, being organised and neat certainly yield lots of positive reasons such cleanliness, neatness, psychological calm, health & hygiene reasons and so on that one can benefit from. and of cos, it is little things we do that helps save a lot of time and reduce a lot of unnecessary stress. things like washing one's cups after drinking, putting things back to the right place after using them, etc.

battery flat

wanted to go for breakfast this morning and guess wat? - my car's battery was flat. sighs! second time in 2 weeks. happened a fortnight ago too at the bv pool car park. in the end, had to ask for a regular swimmer's help to jump start my car. anyway, thank god one of my friends stay nearby and he will be dropping by to help jump start the car. think i gotta change the battery already!

what a way to start a sunday! and to think i have to bring my mum to the temple later! hmmm, challenging! it is such things that colour our otherwise routine and at times mundane lives...

national education

did a framing of what is national education two years back... used this frame to strategize everything in my set-up - from curriculum to daily activities. never did i know that this frame helped my set-up win an award last year. also, was asked to brief my chief about this frame yesterday.

kinda surprised to be given this opportunity yet pleased by it.

my chief also asked me to sent my frame to my headquarters as it could help contribute to framing organisation-wide initiatives.

my bro again

all these while, my bro has been using my name and my cdp account to buy/ sell shares. he did this in order to escape being found out by `people' out there for earning profits and to escape being taxed. i have previously voiced my displeasure about it and he has stopped. yesterday, when i went back to marine parade. my mum asked me to help collect the mails. amongst the mails were bank statements for my brother, my cdp account statement issued by cpf for me, motorbike routine checks by vicom addressed to my late dad, property-related letters addressed to my late dad, and so on.

looking through them, it told me something - that my brother has been dragging his feet trying not to settle the property admin. he seemed pretty secretive about settling the house admin following my dad's demise. it's coming to a year and i think very soon the authorities gonna get to him. also, that he has not been too transparent about using my cdp account for trading shares.

anyway, after dropping my mum off, the domestic helper left the mails addressed to me in my car. i thought it was just natural for her to do so cos the letters were addressed to me. but today, my mum called me telling me that she had had a good and long scolding by my brother for leaving the letters with me. he had told her he would be calling me to demand for the letters to be returned to him.

my mum sounded a little scared and worried. she told me not to tell him that she had told me about it and that i should also not mention anything about it to him. it was rather disturbing. first, he shouldn't be using my name to do share trading. secondly, why scold my mum when it was his own doing in the first place? then again, knowing my brother, it is better to leave the matter as it is. my mum is staying with him. he had left her hungry and thrown her out of the house once before. i cannot afford to let him do the same again this time round.

counting down

57 minus 27 minus 2 minus 16 equals 12. that is the number of working days i have left!

:-)

ps: and if i were to minus off the days where i have to go for my end-of-service admin, medical checks, la la la... i have effectively, about 8-9 days left!

2 days off

my boss gave me two days off for winning an award for my college last month. we are now s$3000 richer! and so, with this 2 days off and my close to 30 days leave, that means my last day of work is really drawing very close! 2.5 weeks more to go to be exact!

going home

today, i brought my mum for her hair cut and perm. the lady that did her hair was an old neighbour who lived at the 11th storey. after dropping mum off, i decided to take a walk to 9th storey, my old home. a place where i moved in in 1974 and eventually left in 1998. my brother has now rented out to an indian expat and his family.

as i stood outside my flat and looked across the corridor, scenes of my childhood flashed by. but the corridor looked somewhat shorter and smaller than what i could recall... i used to run from my house to the opposite corner unit. but now, i cannot imagine how that could be possible. it seemed so short... hmmm, or perhaps it's cos i am now an adult.

other than the newly upgraded lift and the coat of paint, the place looked somewhat similar. but the ambience was different. my neighbours had changed. when we first moved in, almost all the families on our floor had an open door policy. and as a kid, i was able to run from house to house, especially to my next unit. it was some kampong-like. but now, it is dead. every unit's door was closed. shut. locked. it felt familiar yet foreign. cold.

the immediate unit beside my (ex) home has moved out. it used to be a malay family who sold satay at the market. i would play with their children and helped them make ketupat and satay back then. and also, i would babysit their grandchildren... that was some 30 years ago. the family have since moved out. the encik and mak chik have both passed on and their children have all got married and moved out. theirs was an interesting family. amongst their children, one was super duper religious, one murdered someone and is still serving time in jail, another married johorean and migrated there, and 3 others who had rather similar dramatic lives. as for their grandchildren that i used to babysit, they too have all grown up and got married. hmmm, for that matter, even the chinese old man that bought over the unit some 8-9yrs ago has died. the flat is now empty and unoccupied.

down the corridor, the eurasian family that used to live there has also disappeared. their flat is still there. but the eurasian uncle and auntie have both passed on too. both died of complications from diabetes over the last 2 years. their house should now be owned by their eldest daughter (the younger one got married and moved out years ago). the eldest daughter used to study in katong convent. that was in the 70s. she used to be rather flashy and havoc in her teens. i remember how i would see her in her prim and proper chij pinafore one day and the next day, in her flashy sequined dresses. well, now she's still a spinster and works at ck tang.

similarly the 2 units further down was also deserted. families have moved in and out over the years. the only one family that is still there is the nurse, her husband and her only son. she is the second generation. her mum bought the place and moved in at about the same time as we did. 1974. the mum died years ago. the nurse's son was born in 1988. the boy should now be doing his national service or in university.

hmmm, it was an interesting revisit to my past for me. cannot help but reminisce. as i stood there, my past flashed by. the generation that moved here in 1974 have either died or is dying. the next generation is now in the 40s-50s. and the third generation is the one that is up and coming. and i cannot but have to accept that this estate, once the newest and most happening, has also changed. it has aged. and despite the recent upgrading, it still cannot shake away the old familiar feel. the community too has changed. the people are getting older. most of the old ones have gone, new ones have moved in. nonetheless, it is the ghost of the past and the physical surrounding that kept me connected to it. the place had defined my past. and it had accompanied me through the years... in my heart, this will always be home.

this, is marine parade.

jurong bird park

took leave today to bring mum out. decided that i need to do this as i thought she had been kept at my brother's home for too long.

so, i picked her up at 7am and sent her for a hair cut and perm. it was something she had looked forward too. she has had her hair cut and permed by this old neighbour of ours. i learned from the domestic helper that mum was so excited she woke up at 3.30am thinking it was also 6am. well, i teased her about it. heh heh... and after her hair cut and perm, it was off to macdonalds for brunch before heading to jurong bird park. so it was a whole day of walking and walking and i am totally dead beat now!

but i am happy that mum had a great time. have not seen her laugh so much for a while already. told myself that in the weeks to come, when i start clearing my leave, i shall bring her out a couple more times. good to spent more time with her while i can and while she is still ok.

:-)

tam jiak

tam jiak - that is not a good term. it means "greedy eater" literally, or "glutton". that is what i would use the describe the loads of people i see at the food expo being held at the expo! went there with schneider yesterday. and today, brought bee there. frankly, it was rather disgusting to see people gorging themselves with food! you see them do the same at every turn and every corner... aunties rushing from store to store testing out all sorts of cakes, pies, kuihs, taiwanese delights, soups, eggs, and so on... and it seemed like almost every soup you can see are starchy and unhealthy! and after squeezing your way through the crowd, you end up at rows and rows of hawker stalls selling food and again, you see unruly people pushing each other and cutting queues so that they can buy the food first.

disgusting! disgusting! disgusting!

and as i got myself crushed while walking through, i could imagine the scene in the show "spirited away" where all of the gluttons slowly turn to swines! arghhh...

ps: ok, i know i sounded mean, but well, that was what i felt both times i was there. and i guessed it was also cos i didn't feel hungry as i went there after my dinner on both days.

next holiday...

still wondering where i should go for my next holiday. options currently being considered: taiwan, hong kong, christchurch, melbourne, perth... so far, it seemed like perth is likely to be the destination. both taiwan & hong kong will be warm. not what i look for for a break, and probably not too conducive to me driving too. christchurch and melbourne seemed ok, nice and cool. then again, christchurch might be a bit cold, and as for melbourne, that is where it is ground zero for aussieland's h1n1. hmmm... so, that leaves me with perth.

only thing is that i have been to perth a couple of times. but i have not brought bee bee up north. the last time, we traveled south to albany. this time, i'll probably drive him up to the pinnacles.

:-)

benedictine d.o.m.

bought a bottle for my mum yesterday morning at ntuc fairprice bedok - it costs s$71.00. and later in the evening at carrefour plaza singapura, i noted it was going for s$65.50... wah! the price at a heartlander ntuc fairprice branch was way much more expensive than that of carrefour located in town!

wtf!

pricing at fairprice is not very fair after all!

tattooing

got an sms today from jeremy reminding me that we had sometime back agreed to get a common tattoo together. was quite surprised he remembered. ha ha... this will be my second tattoo after the last one i did some 9 years back!

:-)

the previous time...

i have, over the years, gotten more convinced that life is not all about work and money. it is about embracing the various experiences that one can and will encounter as one ages/ grows. it is about living and appreciating `the' moment. i have also come to be less judgmental about people, events and things that people do that i may not necessary believe in. i have come to remind myself that i should not be too quick to pass judgments on them. it was this that led me to do several things when i went through the process of leaving service in late 1999/ early-2000. things that i would have never even thought of doing earlier due to my own prejudices against them.

firstly, i dyed my hair. i had the impression that dying of one's hair was something that only ah lians and undesirable characters do (at least in singapore). and these characters usually do not have good reputation - in their uncouth conduct, in their mannerism, in everything they do. well, that was my perception then. but i couldn't be more wrong. ah lians are as human as you and i. and dying of one's hair has no connections whatsoever with ah lians, to say the least! it was me and my stereotyping. and i thought, hmmm, why not dye my hair once and see what the experience was like. and so, i did it in sep 99 - 4 months before i left service. it was, to a large extend, me challenging myself. and perhaps, to a smaller extend, challenging the system. to do that, i had to bleach it first for my head of hair was black, so black that no amount of dye would have any effect on it. i dyed it burgundy. it looked blackish brown in the room and in office. and everyone in office did not give a second look at it. but when i stepped into the sun, my hair glowed bright red! i looked like a brunette! and that was when i got lots of stares. it was rather funny! but of course, i acted blur.

secondly, immediately after leaving service in early-2000, i got myself a tattoo. again, i had previously stereotyped tattooed people as gangsters. anyway, i challenged myself again. i wanted to experience it. i wanted to experience how painful it. i had my tattoo done at heeren. it was a half hour process. the first pierce was the most memorable. and during the process, i perspired like nobody business as it felt like someone using a knife to slowly carve your skin. anyway, i decided that the tattoo should be at a place where i can see it if i want to and won't see it if i didn't want to. in a way, i want to not let it irk me sometime in the future... in the end, i got the tattoo done between my shoulders below my nape. i still have it today. and i still quite like it.

thirdly, i got my ear pierced. it was also something i thought i want to experience. i pierced my left ear. in fact, after all the hype, the process itself was a non-event. i had it done at wisma atria basement 1. walked into the shop, picked the stud, walked to the counter, the lady took out a puncher, placed it at my earlobe and snapped! it done. i had quite a bit of fun trying out different ear rings after that... now, i don't even bother to wear ear rings, the novelty has subsided. but i enjoyed the experience.

bak chang - endorsed

felt good. got an sms from mike (my friend who was posted to florida at the same time as me), asking if i will be making my "world best" bak chang this year. and at abt the same time, bee bee's mum asked him if i will be making bak chang cos she is looking forward to it... their queries tells me there are people out there who endorses and enjoys my bak chang. feels so good!

:-)

ps: i will not be making them out of respect for my dad.

insulted

felt so insulted... earlier, went to the pharmacy to buy some cranberry supplements. and when i went to the cashier, the cashier auntie asked: "do you have link card? can get points you know..." to which i replied: "no"... and she went on, in a very matter of fact manner: "are you over 50 years old? can get extra 5% discount." and before i can even answer, she added :"oh, sorry sorry, no more discount for you... cos the supplement you buying is already discounted..."

hmmph! and to think i went to have my haircut earlier. and hmmm, for the record, i am 42, turning 43 years old. and i look younger than my age...

no bak chang 2009

this year's 端午节 tuan wu jie falls on 28 may. and it is still within the 1-year period of my dad's demise. as such, i am not supposed to prepare bak changs (dumplings) like i did in previous years. understand from my mum last week that i should not do it is becos tying the dumplings is akin to tying my dad's heart...

hmmm. such another superstitions. anyway, i shan't do it out of respect for my dad. not becos of any reasons, superstitious or otherwise.

:-)

dementia

this is the news i have dreaded. it came today. i visited my mum as usual this sunday afternoon. i sat beside her and chatted. we spoke the usual daily mundane stuff and about her well-being. and when i asked about her medical appointments, she told me she had visited the hospital for a series of appointments last week. i asked what the doctor said. she couldn't tell, except that they spoke in english which she couldn't understand. and she added that her visits to the medical appointments were very expensive and related how she had to pay s$4.50 for her visit to sgh, and s$6.00 for her visit to the eye clinic, and so on. it sounded weird to me. i asked again if she really meant s$4.50. she repeated the same and added that it usually cost her only s$2.00. i asked again. and she repeated the same again. sensing something amiss, i called the domestic worker. and she said that the doctors had confirmed mum is showing early signs of dementia.

i learned from the domestic worker that my mum would mutter things to herself daily, how she would wake up at 1am, go for her shower and thought it was 7am, and how she would forget things she said. i felt very sad. i started tearing. but i tried to sound cheerful and pretended that all was normal. as the conversation went on, my mum told me that her memory is failing. she also told me how my brother would, at times, laugh at her for saying things that sounded illogical. the topic of the conversation moved to life; and death. mum told me she is old and that she does not have much time left. and since she brought up the topic about dying, i went further. i asked her if she is afraid. she said no. and i asked why. she said she is old and that death is a sure thing. it will come sooner or later. well, i know that it is important to talk to the old about dying, and i do it rather often to both my parents whenever i can. but that was when they were relatively healthier. now, my dad had passed on. and my mum is sick. somehow, talking about death now seemed so difficult.

i asked her what if she has any worries. and she said - no, nothing. except that she worries about not having enough money for her medical bills. and she added that she will not be able to leave me any money when she dies. i consoled her. i said that the last thing she should worry is her medical bills. and that as far as i am concern, after all these years of caring for me, it is my duty and my turn to provide for her and look after her when she is old, and that for now, she should focused on her well-being. i added that i do not expect anything from her. it was very cliched. but then again, i felt i needed to say it and i felt very sad. very very sad.

i cried as i drove home. perhaps my mind had over-played up the whole dementia thing. and perhaps i my mind had painted a picture that is too bleak. then again, i told myself i need to be positive and with whatever effort i have, i shall make it as smooth as it can for her. i reminded myself that nothing is permanent and that this perhaps is the start of mum's final journey. there is a start to life. and there is an end to life.

and i am tearing as i write this post.

breakfast @ t3

the usual question we would ask ourselves every weekend is - `today, go where for breakfast?'... and invariably, we would end up in bedok market, fengshan market, or simei. but today, bee bee suggested why not we go changi airport t3?... now why did we not thought about it earler? it was such a change considering thus far, our trips to the airport was only for dinners and suppers!

t3 in the morning is very different. or well, perhaps the place is the same, but the staff manning the different shops are different. there are a lot more people. and there's a sort of buzz that one don't feel at night. and of cos, with this different setting, ah kun toast tasted so much nicer too!

it's a good start to the sunday!

:-)

kl's birthday

t'was an interesting evening with beautiful people. dinner at crystal jade @ vivocity. kl's birthday celebration with kl, dan, schneider and bee. followed by drink and cakes at fullerton hotel. the little walk we took to clifford pier threw up quite a bit of surprises. the place is really chic and upmarket. modern chinese theme. must really visit the place for dinner sometime!

:-)

subscription money

i went to pay my annual subscription to the temple yesterday. usually this was done by my mum. but this year, she is too weak to do so and asked me to do it instead. so, it is my first after 42 plus years of existence. i supposed this subscription is in return for sheng-hong kong's (cheng huang laoye in hanyu pinyin) protection and blessings. and thinking about it, conceptually speaking, it is not very different from those protection money one pays to triads (choy choy choy, sacrilegious to compare gods to triads! it would probably be more appropriate for me to frame it as paying a subscription as a form of the commitment to support the temple's upkeeping and worshiping efforts).

:-)

bloodied urine

it happened on fri. but cleared in the evening. and then it happened on sat late afternoon again. weird looking. cloudy, brown, rusty. blood in urine. kl suggested i go for a medical follow-up. might be a more worrisome underlying cause.

better drown myself with lots of fluid. hmmm...

my silent protest

yesterday, i applied for an easisave account with ocbc. with this account in place, i can proceed to cancel my current account and my savings account with posbank/ dbs - an account that i had since primary 1... hmmm, more than 35yrs ago. i had to paste 10cents stamps daily and to submit my completed stamp card to save s$1... heh heh. then again, there is really nothing to get sentimental about. i just do not want to associate myself anymore with a bank that supports an anti-gay cause, in the guise of what they call `pro-family'.

clearing my office

i have cleared most of my stuff in my office yesterday. it looks bare now.

:-)

of dragonfruits & oranges

talking a lot but saying nothing! that was how i would describe a conversation i heard when i took the mass rapid transit (mrt) earlier this week. you see, i had sent my car for it's regular servicing. and in the later part of the afternoon, i took the mrt to collect my car. during the journey, two late-40's executives (men!) boarded the train. and as there was limited seats left, one of them had to stand. one of them sat beside me and the person he spoke with stood almost directly in front of me. and they spoke so loudly! and their conversation was one of the lamest i ever heard in a long long time. i sat there, shook my head, rolled my eyes and if i had not released my tension by sending smses, i would probably end up with some internal injury... here's a few lines of their 15min conversation:

mr a: today is tuesday.

mr b: ya, today is tuesday. and tomorrow is wednesday.

mr a: oh, i like to eat dragonfruit.

mr b: oh, dragonfruit? ya, it's nice, but it is a fruit right?

mr a: ya, it is a fruit. and i eat it often.

mr b: i heard it is not a very good nor healthy fruit.

mr a: oh, i eat the white dragonfruit one.

mr b: oh the white one huh? i heard got yellow one leh.

mr a: ya, and also got the red one...

well... i think you get the idea of how lame this conversation was... they went round and round and round about how fragrant dragonfruits are (or for that matter, the lack of any frangrance) for a good 5min plus. and after that, they started talking about oranges...

mr a: and by the way, i also eat orange.

mr b: oh is it? orange got big one, and small one oso...

la la la... sighs... and it was the very fact that becos the conversation was so lame, it became my focus. it got my attention. and i got so engaged with it. well, in a way, i think everyone was listening to it. and interestingly, the train seemed so quiet at that time. and damned it, i missed my stop in the end!

clearing leave

it's about 70days to leaving service. and finally, my boss gave the green light for me not to be involved in the new term that will be starting next week (originally my programme co-ordinator had insisted that i be included cos there is short of staff to undertake all the activities!).

hurray! but of cos, to be fair, i need to complete 2-3 more major projects before i can go for my leave. hope to be able to complete them in the next 3 weeks plus.

:-)

working late

i cannot believe this! it is close to 9pm and i am still in office working! and about 8, one of my colleague knocked on my door and started to discuss stuff with me. so unbecoming for a retiring personnel like me to be at work at this hour right?!

ok, the positive side of things - i stayed late cos there is a lot of work to do (what's new huh?). and amongst this pile of stuff is - to prepare a set of slides for my boss to brief my chief (who will be visiting us two weeks' time). and becos my colleague came to my office (at such hour), he shared with me his perspective of how the presentation can be approached. hmmm, fresh perspective, but yes, it certainly provided me another way to look through how my slides can be scoped.

:-)

blessings!

alamak! just kenah reminded by james my good friend that my postings are always so pessimistic and depressing and that i should have more positive postings. yup, looking at it, i think so too... i guessed it was negative experiences that fuel my motivation to write more than anything else. and becos i am naturally a more pessimistic person, my postings end up sounding extra negative.

hmmm, well, thanks to james, i will certainly try to capture more positive posting in addition to what i usually post. or at least, a more positive slant to how i should look at things. for a start, it's a blessing to have friends around who is open and sincere enough to point out to me areas to improve on. certainly, i do not know my blind spots until i am told of it. and even then, i will probably need constant reminders and cajouling to act on my blind spots and limitations.

thanks james!

:-)

ps: this is the watch james and not ice cream james or my ex james or my friend's brother james or my cousin james... hmmm, i certainly do have lotsa james in my life!

where the stars don't shine

i was driving alone on a well lit road last night. it was a one way road. hmmm, for that matter, i have not seen any turns branching out/ feeder road leading into this road for a long while since i started driving on it. not too far front from me, the row of street lights stopped. i reached the point and i slowed down. but i continued driving. the light from the last street lamp faded away. and the road got dimmer and dimmer.

before long, a fallen pine tree appear in front of me. i had to stop. the tree laid right across my path. from the look of it, it did not look like it was chopped down. rather, from the ill-defined, jagged edge of the broken trunk, it seemed like as though the tree was snapped by some huge celestial hands. i alighted from my car and with whatever strength i had, i pushed the tree aside. when i managed to clear sufficient width for my car, i squeezed through and i continued my journey.

the road after the fallen tree was literally black. there was no light. there were no stars. for that matter, even if there were stars, the light failed to penetrate the darkness. the blackness was so thick that i could not even make sense of my surroundings (the blackness reminded me of the story of "voyage of the dawn treader" in the chronicles of narnia). strangely enough, i was able to vaguely make sense of the road kerb not too far away. my sense of hearing took over my sense of sight as i drove on. i was literally navigating using my ears. the road was muddy, judging from the sounds my tyres made when it rowed over the road surface. the journey seemed never ending. worst of all, i did not know where i was heading. my only focus was that i needed to continue driving. and i couldn't turn back.

and then something happened. a dark grey figure flashed out from no where. it was faceless. it was wearing a victorian dress. it's sudden appearance shocked me. my instinct told me to accelerate. and... i ran over the figure. then, i heard an eerie scream... hmm, or was there a scream after all?...

i woke up... rudely shocked. scared. heartbeat racing and thumping hard. i broke into cold sweat... and it took me a while before i managed to calm myself down and coaxed myself back to sleep...

the pink dot & the line

"a dot" did not mean we have achieved what we had hoped for. nonetheless, it was significant. it was a defining moment. liberating. and certainly, something that we can all be proud of. and to me, it also marked the start of a beautiful picture. just as all fires start with a spark, all beautiful pictures start with "a dot". and i am sure the picture drawn with colours of the rainbow will be a beautiful one.

i have previously posted the story of "the dot & the line". and looking at it again, i couldn't help but think about "the line" that was recently so heatedly debated and "the dot" that was celebrated over the weekend! but of cos, the context of the story was different... then again, how wonderful it would be if "the line" could ever love the "the dot", or at least, accept "the dot"...

ignorance

over the past couple of weeks, khoon seng and i exchanged quite a bit of emails. but frankly, these mails were more one way where he was doing all the asking and i was doing all the answering. and all the questions centered around the issue of sexuality, or more specifically, homosexuality. the chain of mails started from sexuality education for kids, the role of parents to lifestyle of homosexuals. questions posed include "since when did you start to be gay?" (ans: i did not `start' to be gay at a particular point in time in my life, i was born gay), "as a parent, how can i better talk to my kids about sexuality?" (ans: give the facts objectively, state your views/ stand, and explain the reasons), and so on. i gave my answers. objectively, not in a pro-homosexual, nor anti-religion manner. i impressed upon him that the value judgment must come from him, based on his beliefs and values.

it was indeed a very good conversation. and occasionally i would share with bee bee what we discussed. he was rather amazed at how patient i was with the questions which, at times, sounded rather offensive. frankly, there were one or two occasions where i felt offended. but reflecting, i think the questions arose from ignorance (such as bisexuals have both male and female reproductive organs), stereotypes (eg lesbians are all tomboys and gays are all effeminate people), or gross generalisation of perceptions (eg hiv incidents are higher amongst drug users, hiv are higher amongst msms, and therefore gay men are drug users) or even very conservative christian-based views.

i guess bee might not understand me as to why i had kept my patience and continued with the conversation. being patient and explaining the details to khoon seng, or, for that matter, anyone who are open or bothered to engage me in such conversation is one small way i could contribute to eradicate ignorance amongst my friends and the community in general. for every person whom i can share my perspective, i am sure i will be able to help cultivate a society that is more inclusive, a society that accepts my existence. even if they do not necessary accept my sexuality.

disturbing

ref my earlier posting on "i teach gp, not homosexuality", i have just learnt that the lady "lisa li" (supposedly a gp teacher) who posted it has been forced by the education ministry to remove the post after some "anonymous" person/s made a complain.

frankly, i am not surprised by this reaction from the ministry although i am rather disturbed about it (if is indeed true, and i see no reason not to believe so). firstly, yes, i do understand the need for responsible postings by public servants. but based on her reflections, my opinion is that she has been very objective when she stated her views and that her stand that all facts need to be provided in order for the subject to be robustly thought through is a logical one. isn't this what gp is all about? secondly, what did this act of the ministry signal? that public servants no longer have the ability to share their individual point of views?

hmmmph!

i teach gp, not homosexuality

i found this interesting reflection by a lady in facebook (a teacher i supposed) and have published here for keepsake. not too sure who she is, but certainly, i like the way she articulated her thoughts. and from her writings and the comments posted, it tells me there are very diverse views out there. and this is a very good way to get people to talk about these often considered taboo issues.

=====
With all due respect to the well-meaning “concerned parents” out there, this is starting to sound like a dodgy GP essay to me.

Apparently, because my students and I “discuss topics such as the legalisation of gay marriage and parents of the same sex forming families through adoption” in class, I am guilty of promoting homosexuality.*

Right.

But never mind. MOE has already come to the rescue with their statement that “GP lessons are meant to promote critical thinking” and GP teachers “should also adhere to social norms and values of our mainstream society”.*

Oh yes, apparently one can facilitate critical thinking, that is, the reasoned questioning of assumptions, norms and values AND fully reinforce and adhere to social norms at the same time.

And wait, I see this again, in the debate on sexuality education and just what should be said about homosexuality:

1. Homosexuality is against the social norms and values of mainstream society.
2. Homosexuality is illegal and considered unnatural under Singapore law.

The first thing any student of GP (or indeed, any human being who knows anything about world history) will realise, is that social norms change.

Secondly, if you insist on going by “mainstream” values and beliefs, you may like to follow 43% of Singaporeans and look to Buddhism, which views homosexuality on neutral grounds, as opposed to Christianity (15%) and Islam (15%).

In any case, the legal argument will only hold as long as homosexual acts are considered illegal in Singapore.... and judging from the force of change in the world, frankly my dear, you can't hold the dam for much longer.

Singapore's law criminalising homosexual acts is based on British law – which decriminalised this in 1967.

Other countries which have decriminalised homosexuality include France (1791), The Netherlands (1811), Brazil (1830), Ottoman Empire (1858), Germany (1871), Japan (1880), Italy (1889), USSR (1922), Denmark (1930), Iceland (1940), Switzerland (1942), Sweden (1944), Greece (1951), Thailand (1956), Israel (1963), Chad (1967), Canada (1969), Kosovo (1970), Australia (1981), South Africa (1994), China (1997) etc.

This shows an increasing acceptance that personal preferences that do not harm anyone else should not be governed (in this case, criminalised) by the state. As with the wearing away of all other forms of inequality, I believe this discrimination of homosexuals cannot last.

So what are we left with?

Are we justifying a brand of education with reasons that won't hold weight for much longer?

You may argue that making something legal doesn't make it right, and you have a point.

But then that would depend on what you consider “right”, which really is a moral issue and one that concerns personal belief.

So I have two points for you:

1. Personal beliefs – religious or otherwise – should not influence the laws of a secular society. The onus is on parents and preachers to educate their children in these beliefs. Say what you want at the pulpit, not in Parliament, and certainly, do not foist this responsibility onto your child's teachers in secular schools.

2. It is unfair, impractical and dangerous to insist that youths be given only the old rules when they live in a completely different world. Parents, if you insist on a black-and-white moral education for your children, you only drive them into secrecy when they need you most. If teachers cannot teach openly and factually, rest assured that the internet will.

As an educator and maybe future parent, I admit I am less concerned about whether my children are homosexual/ transsexual/ (fill in the blank) or not, and more concerned that they should always respect others and themselves, never discriminate, always critically examine issues, always feel free to share their thoughts with me without fear of condemnation, always love and always be loved no matter what.

This is my hope.

PS. If you think your children will rush to become homosexual/transsexual/(fill in the blank) because of my words, I THANK YOU for crediting me with such influence! By the way, your children are smarter than you think....
