i went to pay my annual subscription to the temple yesterday. usually this was done by my mum. but this year, she is too weak to do so and asked me to do it instead. so, it is my first after 42 plus years of existence. i supposed this subscription is in return for sheng-hong kong's (cheng huang laoye in hanyu pinyin) protection and blessings. and thinking about it, conceptually speaking, it is not very different from those protection money one pays to triads (choy choy choy, sacrilegious to compare gods to triads! it would probably be more appropriate for me to frame it as paying a subscription as a form of the commitment to support the temple's upkeeping and worshiping efforts).
