there has been lots of publicity about how we, as a society, be more gracious and should show considerations to persons who need help. many quipped about incidents where public do not give up their seats to the elderly, the frail, the expectant mums-to-be in public transport. i think these remarks are valid and warrants lots of reflections and possibly drive the conversation amongst singaporeans about how we can be more gracious as a whole. but yesterday, while on a relatively crowded bus, i saw this elderly gentleman placing his bags on the seat and in doing so, denied many others a seat. the elderly gentleman, for that matter, was sitting in the middle of 2 seats.
and looking at his behaviour, it kinda suggest that he knew it was not right but chose to continue with this inconsiderate act. kinda regretful cos in doing so, he had set a bad example and allowed people to cite him as an example to justify their refusal to give up seats to elderly people. yup, there are full of such people around. while we focused on how to educate people about showing considerations to the elderly, the frail, etc, these people need to also know how not to take such courtesies for granted and to also reciprocate with similar behaviour.
