recently, i went to a a neighbourhood cake shop at simei to buy a piece of chocolate gâteau. and that was when i found out how gâteau was pronounced in sing-kah-pour. well, i knew it was chocolate gâteau cos the little placard by the card said so. and this was how my purchase went:
me: hello auntie, can i have a piece of the chocolate gâteau ("gah-toh" as it was supposed to be pronounced)? take away, please.
cake shop auntie: har?
me: oh, i want to take away one chocolate gâteau.
cake shop auntie (staring real hard at me): hhhaaaaarrrrr!?!?!?!?!
me (now, using my finger to point at the cake): i want that one. take away.
cake shop auntie: orh, you want dat chalk-ko-luct gah-tiu har? ok, ok... wait arr...
me: oh... ok, ok...
