it happened a couple of times 2-3 years back, took a break last year and this year, it happened again. this time round, it was the nian gao (年糕)! yes! i am referring to my dog, sapphie, eating the new year stuffs i placed on the table. and learning from previous experiences (2012, 2011), i had not placed the bak kwa (preserved sweetened barbecue meat) on the table. but this year...
i came back from breakfast and found the nian gao (whatever was left on it) lying on the floor. and the banana leaves that was used to wrap it strewed all over the floor. and needless to say, a guilty-looking sapphie looking at me. it was the same scene as last year when she walloped a whole lot of rice dumpling!
anyway, buying the nian gao for lunar new year was something we used to do in my old place. and we would offer it to the tua pek kong (大伯公) and place it on the altar annually when we sent him off to the heavens. but since i do not install such altar in my current place, i have adapted the practice by putting a nian gao on my table in the living room every lunar new year. after all, i do subscribe to the symbolic nature of the nian gao as it represents 步步高升 (or constant promotions/ progress/ improvements).
darn! if i am a superstitious person, it looks like this year will see no improvements or progress for me! haha! but one thing's for sure. she'll be having a bad tummy soon.
