my chief bought us a department lunar new year lunch wednesday, the seventh day of the lunar new year. this day was commemorated as the "human day" and celebrated as every human being's birthday.
in singapore (and malaysia), a routine thing for everyone to do was to toss the yú shēng (鱼生 or raw fish salad). the character 鱼 (yú) itself sounds like 余 or "excess" and 生 (shēng) sounds like 升 or (increase/ promote). put together it means "grow in excesses" aka prosperity and wealth. haha… chinese people, so full of crap! but hey, that defines our chineseness! no?
haha… ok, back to our department lunch. it was a 10-course lunch and given that there were 12 of us, my boss decided to order 4 more dishes. and we literally ate and ate and ate till we were all so stuffed! so much for the excesses right?! for that matter, we were already quite full after the first tossing of the yú shēng! and at the rate we were going, we would all be growing excesses at places that we want slim!
we had had a superbly good lunch!
