there was half a huat kueh (发糕) from lunar new year left in the fridge and i decided to get the maid to steam it and have it as a snack over the last weekend. thought i needed to do it before it gets too hard.
for me, eating the huat kueh was not a case of simply the taste that matter. rather, it was the whole experience of peeling the paper, breaking small parts of it off, nibbling the bits and allowing the huat kueh to melt in your mouth as the coconut flavor spread… hmmm, it reminded me of my younger days, the feeling of home, the feeling of traditions, of how the huat kueh was only bought during festive seasons, of my mum steaming it… the feeling being transported back to the simpler days of the past.

such a simple fare, yet such priceless experience. something that no topnotch restaurant food can ever achieve.
