i was deployed in tampa (united states, florida) to co-ordinate saf ops in the middle east (particularly iraq and afghanistan) in june 2004. worked like hell there. was a one-man operation. yet from the singapore side, their impression was that i was enjoying myself and not focusing too much on my work. and when i got home, everyone that was involved in the operational deployment was awarded overseas operational medals. but conveniently, i was left out. the reasons for this was that i was in states and thus i was not physically in theater. so i did not qualify. this was the same for the people who was deployed to the states before and after me.
today, i recieved a coffee table book from saf public affairs. it is a book about saf's ops in iraq. it chronicles the experiences of people deployed in operations there. i scan through it. i noted that there was totally no mention of the people working very hard co-ordinating the deployment in the background. and in the book, the pictures are all so nice and rosy. and there are even quite a few posed photos. totally staged.
i threw the book away.
