went for the dim sum dollies performance yesterday at the esplanade. thought it was not as funny as their previous shows. some observations here...
- age seemed to be catching up with selena tan. added to her large size, she came across many a times that she was breathless and that she couldn't catch up with the rest of the actors. and it showed in her split second slower movements during the dances, her inability to bend her knees, kick high enough etc compared to pam and denise. but she was still the mama dolly and her size, if anything, command a certain presence.
- pam oei was the most natural of all the actors in the show. she really stood out (as usual) when she does her cantonese bits. thoroughly enjoyed her performance! brilliant!
- denise was the youngest of the dollies (in terms of number of years playing the role of a dolly), having filled emma yong's place after the latter passed away 3 years back. and perhaps that was why she came across as trying very hard, too hard at times. but overall, i thought she blended well enough with the team and carried all her roles very competently. good job!
- hossan has always played the supporting roles in all the dolly productions. but he did came across after so many shows as an integral part of it, or for that matter, a fourth dolly. and without sounding a tat too sexist, i thought he would complement them very well for that fact that he was male but it turned out again and again (particularly this time round) where he had to appear in drag. but that would the script writer's problem and not be his. still, he was a really lovely and lively fourth member of the team. great fun!
- as for the loh mai guys... i must say it was a little too much to have them appear again and again in drag. that was one of my key pain points. other than that, they filled the roles of supporting the team of (4) dollies sufficiently well enough.
