friend requests in fb

reflection and question of the day for me - why do you add me if you do not post status updates in your fb? this question was post to me by an (old) friend whom i had reconnected recently and whom i had added in facebook. he accepted my friend request but saw nothing in my facebook status updates. pre-empting questions from him, i told him to expect to see nothing in my status updates and that was when he asked me the question. i suspected he also felt cheated by this imbalance in information sharing for after all, we access people's facebook to read their status updates and to get a glimpse into their lives. that was how i framed his reaction when he asked me the question above.

but his question set me thinking...

of cos, my initial response to him was - so that i can keep in touch with him, but thinking further, i could think of a few reasons and these include (1) i could stalk him, haha... no la, i meant, so that i could be posted about things that happen in his life, or (2) so that i can have a repository of friends

frankly, for the first, it was not really the main reason cos i do not have the habit of checking out people's postings. i did that for my previous attempts in facebook but found it to be rather stressful and sometimes very disappointing. it was so difficult and stressful to be blasted daily with views that differ so significantly from mine. and i end up feeling very disappointed with my friends. i guess we have this hidden desire for our friends to share our same thoughts. no? the second reason was probably why i chose to add friends despite not using facebook the "conventional way", and that is - to have a repository of friends. a repository that allow me to keep in touch as and when i want to. not much different from having a phonebook in that sense. haha...

well, since i am talking about fb and friends, i do also want to add that i do not request for friends unless i feel there is a certain level of connection. and on the same token, i do not accept requests readily. i do so only for people whom i have the desire to add.

  1. Facebook, for some, it's always about having thousands of virtual friends, uploading duck face selfie, uploading tons and tons of food pics, good lord, then openly bitching about others...

for me, the maximum number of friends i had was 90, all of them were people i know in real life, my cousins and my aunts, and some good souls from overseas whom i have never met before, but somehow became close friends, and i don't really update regularly, but i do check on my friends most of the time...

but few months back, i noticed my news feed was filled with hate speech, racism, religious bigotry, homophobic posts...at one point, my "God fearing friends" were posting nonsense stuff like "non believers will burn in hell"...then my atheist friends went like "God is an imaginary bullshit"...and it was seriously depressing checking the news feed via my smartphone every morning...and then few started to question me after they came across my LGBT related articles which was published on Malaysiakini's website...they asked me things like "why are you still not married when you are going to be 28"...and i went like, it's my life, and it's none of your business...

then one day, the "detox" process started on my friends list, removed all unwanted toxic minded humans...

really Jeffrey, i am sure you understand what i am trying to say, these people, and the things they do, i just a human, not a saint, and i have limits to my patience, so ya, removed them completely from my life as well, including my cousins and my aunts...

now there are only 20 friends on my Facebook account..LoL..

life's much easier when there's less nonsense around :-D

  2. lol... i did the easiest thing when i had lots of such stressful posts... i deleted my account!

yup, that was what i did back in 201? (i recalled it was during the singapore general elections). there were so many hate posts and so many emotional posts that really stressed me out! and to have your friends doing such things was a tat too much for me to bear.

    lol!

but hey, don't be surprised if one day i add you k?

  3. no problem, i will definitely accept your request, besides finding good friendship in this crazy society is something pretty rare, by the way, my id would be Arvind Ram Kumar with a motivational quote profile picture, i think there is another guy with same name from India, once i told my friend to search for my profile, and he accidentally added that guy, lol...
