uncle & auntie @ hawker center

yesterday, as i wheeled my mum towards the hawker center for breakfast, i noted that the usual table for handicapped persons was not occupied by the usual sam ku lok por. quite a refreshing change actually. instead, it was occupied by an elderly uncle and a slightly younger auntie. as i arrived, i stopped and looked around for a table. and clearly, uncle and auntie must have felt awkward to be seated at a table reserved for handicapped. uncle then called out to me and tell me in fluent english... there are a few tables for handicapped persons at the other end of the hawker... i nodded, smiled and continued to look around. in my mind, i was thinking it would have been more straight forward for him to give up the table! (considering he was only drinking coffee)... anyway, from his few words, i thought uncle must be peranakan. i smiled. and uncle repeated his sentence. i said i am buying coffee from that stall... and decided to get my mum to move out of the wheelchair to sit with a family on a table beside the uncle and auntie... this is where things get interesting...

auntie then started talking in hokkien, not the peranakan hokkien (as i had assumed after uncle spoke english) but instead "ah-lian" hokkien... auntie gave a running commentary of everything i did! oh, the son is helping the mother sit on the normal chair, oh, the son is holding his mother's hand, oh, the mother can actually stand up... na, na, na, you see, the wheelchair can be folded, and ya, the mother is seated at the table,... and she went on and on.... even after i bought the you char kuih and broke it into pieces for mum... auntie just went on and on... see, the son is now getting the you char kuih for the mother... wah ranz... i am literally hearing my life story being narrated as i live my life lor...

lol...

is this what people will become when they get to that age? i hope i don't...
