i finally managed to get my maid's passport renewed.
following the last failed attempt (that saw mum getting all paranoid and mentally haywire), i decided to change my tactic. i took a day's leave today and last night told my mum, without giving her any options, that i would be bringing my niece out and that i would be bringing her along. i explained to her that my niece is having her mid-year holiday and thus, would be free for me to bring her out. and this morning, just before we left, i told my mum that i would, "along the way", drop the maid off at the embassy before i head off to my brother's place. and once i dropped the maid off, i brought her to the temple. visits to the temple always has this therapeutic effect on her and she had also asked to visit the temple a few days back.
heh heh... everything went well according to plan. so yes, i got the maid's passport renewed, and my mum got her wishes of visiting the temple fulfilled.

Erm, on the topic of age and wisdom: it depends on the individual. If all they do is reinforce their fear and anger have they actually moved beyond being a child? The lessons learned from life or education are important. You already know that, but it should be kept explicit 'imho'. Otherwise, it sounds like age = wisdom and we both know that isn't necessarily true ;-)
