new phase @ work

i am entering a new phase at my workplace.

the lead that i had previously reported to had finally left and i now report directly to my chief. am not too sure how she will be managing me, but from the look of things, i think she will probably task me with quite a few new things, despite knowing of my plateful of things. after observing her since she joined, when push come to shaft and she needs people to help her, our priorities kinda didn't feature anymore in her considerations.

of cos, one might argue the age-old mantra that "my boss's priorities are also my priorities", and i cannot disagree with that. but the reality of this is that when such situations occur, and when our own priorities are high and for that matter, happening at that very moment, boss's priorities can be very difficult to accommodate. previously, i do have my lead to ward off such last minutes arrows and he leaves me to do what i need to do. now, i will have to handle such situations when it occurs. an extra load of issues to manage i guess.

just need to manage it as it comes.

  1. Hi Jeffrey,

I don't think your boss was kidding when she told your peers they should be open to helping with your group's task list. Yeah, I know: been there and pulled those teeth.

"Necessity is the mother of invention" and some may help, especially if you establish credibility by acknowledging whatever help they give. Personallty, I wouldn't start cross-delegating with anything critical ;-) Unless, there is a responsible person with needed skills in a peer's group that you might want to recruit some day after you help develop them (just kidding, kind of ;-)

    Best regards, Edwin

  2. Hey,

Yup, that is exactly what i intend to do - delegate only those that are less critical! and even then, only after lots of coaching.

    :-)
