keeping the no-lying precept

i had spend some time to delete all my pictures/ status updates/ postings in my facebook lately as part of my exit from facebook. and in the process, i realized i had some past postings where i posted urls from controversial sites. and looking at them now, it was clear to me that i had been emotional. i reckoned that that by reporting these urls, i had helped to spread lies. and i asked some myself some questions...

• when we deliberately spread a piece of information that we know is true, are we guilty of lying?
• when we deliberately spread a piece of information that we know is not true, are we guilty of lying?
• when we deliberately spread a piece of information that we were not sure whether is true or not, are we guilty of lying?
• when we deliberately spread a piece of information that we were not sure whether is true or not, then go about verifying it. and when we found it to be not true, we did not retract the information and continue spreading it. are we guilty of lying?
• when we deliberately spread a piece of information that we were not sure whether is true or not, then go about verifying it. and when we found it to be not true, we retract the information and stop spreading it. are we guilty of lying?

these were some questions i asked myself when i revisited some of my postings in my facebook. and i concluded that if i continue to keep postings in my facebooks after finding out that they are not true, i would have broken my precept of not lying.

hmmm...

ps: as to what my answers are to the questions above, for question 1 and 5, no, we are not guilty of lying. for questions 2 and 4, yes we are guilty of it. as for question 3, it is quite "iffy" and we can argue both for or against. but i think the key point here is that if we have made the decision to post the url, we must also take it upon ourselves to verify the information. that would be a responsible thing to do as a buddhist. many a times, it is not whether we lie or not, it is about our responsibilities to seek the truth. that, ultimately is what being enlightened is about.
