i went to the swimming pool this afternoon and as i entered the toilet to change, there were 2 old men (think they should be in their 70s). they had just taken their shower and were chatting as they dried themselves. the conversation was certainly a very interesting one... it went something like this:
old man a: these days, life is so difficult. we really have no choice but to cho gu cho beh (be cow and horse - hokkien phrase describing one slogging away). and i think i am now like that, cho gu cho beh.
old man b: aiyah, what cho gu cho beh, i'd rather cho kau (be a dog).
old man a: eh? why want to cho kau. when you cho gu cho beh, at least you will be led around to eat. and as long as there are vegetable, you will be kept alive.
old man b: aiyah, when you cho gu cho beh, you only eat and eat and do nothing. at least when i cho kau, not only do i have food, i can still look after the house.
hmmm, very profound indeed. heh, heh... by that time, i had changed into my swimming trunk and as i walked out of the changing room, i reflected... hmmm, these are 70-plus years old men. and i supposed they know they do not have much time left. but based on their simple analogies, i really think there are some depth to what they said. one felt contented as long as he is looked after. and the other wants to make sure he is useful to others.
interesting...
