watched azur & asmar on sat nite. it was such a colourful show! nonetheless, the story came across as a bit weird for in the end, according to one of the girls who exclaimed as she walked out of the cinema: "wow! it's like a united nations lor, each one fucking each other's woman lor..." well, not really, not in that crude manner. let me explain...
the story goes something like that... an arab nursemaid raises azur, the son of a french lord, and asmar, her own son. the two boys were as close as brothers despite the fact that one was white and the other coloured (arab/ middle eastern). the nursemaid would tell them bedtime stories, one of which was about the legendary "beautiful fairy of the djinns" from her homeland. she would tell tales of how many had ventured into the land of the djinns and fighting with magical creatures in order to gain the fairy's hand in marriage. both boys grew up, building a bond closer than that of friends. it so happened that one day, with the intent to stop asmar's bad influences (`bad' in the eyes of the status-conscious french lord) on azur, the lord decided to send away azur his son to town, and thereafter dismissed the nursemaid & asmar. the heartbroken azur grew up, convinced that he will one day crossed the sea to look for asmar.
well, the story was rather straight forward. after their reunion, azur & asmar embarked on the journey to win the heart of the "fairy of the djinns". they eventually found the fairy. the thing was, the fairy looked of arabic descent and given that both arrived at the same time, it was not possible for her to marry both. and after a long period of indecision, she asked for one of her fellow-fairies (her cousin - and a white one!) to help. eventually what turned out was, instead of helping her decide, the white fairy picked the the coloured asmar as her beau while the coloured fairy chose the white azur... oh, and for that matter, even asmar's mother also paired up with a french beggar... this ending was a li'l weird i must say and i guess it's a bit hard to swallow. so now, you understand why the girl exclaimed as such :-)
