there have been many articles about mr lee since his demise. many, especially from the western media, continue to decry his policies and his hard-handedness. common themes around the lack of individual freedom, dictatorship, authoritarian, etc continue to be featured.
of course, these writers are entitled to their views. i can only say this - he is a man of his time, shaped by very unusually tumultuous circumstances present during his time. of wars, discriminations and threats. he did what he needed to do. and his motivation was not a selfish one. it was one that was in the interest of singapore. and as a person who had lived a huge part of my life under his premiership, i had benefited tremendously. and i had enjoyed one of the highest standard of living, of freedom, of safety, of security, of quality of life that, i dare say, comparable to most developed countries in the world.
