nearest word i can find... just could not understand the very thuggish/ gangster behaviour between china chinese - between two strangers, between customer and salesperson, and so on. courtesy was really not the order of the day. people could actually quarrel and shout at the other party when they were obviously in the wrong - eg customer bought a cup of coffee from the starbucks counter, his girlfriend collected his drink, took a detour, he went to the salesperson and scolded the salesperson (big time) and despite explaining that his girlfriend had collected his drink, he countered and alleged that they wanted to cheat him... and when his girlfriend appeared with the drink, he did not even apologize, and walked off! one of the more than a dozen experiences in my 4 days in shanghai.
