most people clear their annual leave during the nov-dec period. that seemed the natural thing to do right? all the kids are having their annual extended school holidays, there's christmas, new year, and what-have-you celebrations... but for gay men like me (and many other singles), it makes every sense to stay at work during this period. here're some reasons why i said so...
(1) no stress... when the bosses (invariably married and with kids) go on leave, there is hardly any work. so, this is the time to clear as much work without any stress!
(2) lagi no stress... with other people going on leave (and not just bosses) cross-functional work cannot be done at the usual pace. thus, things will be slow and no one's gonna stress you on deadlines. added to that, bosses tend to also be more forgiving and/ or give extended deadlines for works assigned.
(3) more bonding... during this period, there are lots of gifts and presents presented by business partners. and most of the time, they are perishables such as fruits, turkeys, log cakes, fruit cakes, and so on. what this meant was that there would be many many occasions where we get to eat free of charge! more importantly, we have more opportunities to interact with our colleagues during these breaks and thus foster closer relationships with fellow colleagues.
(4) lagi more bonding... on top of the food and opportunistic interactions with colleagues, this period also coincide with christmas and new year celebrations. so, it added to further downtime and increased interactions. this only meant further team bonding.
(5) enhanced experience... outside work, due to lesser people heading to work, traffic becomes smoother, and public transport gets less crowded. so, the overall experience of getting to/ fro work becomes a lot better.
(6) and so on...
most importantly, by not taking leave during this period, we can then clear our leave during peak periods and have our breaks when people are working like crazy! nett-nett the stress level (and stressless periods) gets spread out through the year and we become more productive as a result!
no? heh...
ps: just got inspired by malimo's comment in my facebook to reflect about why we should take leave during periods when everyone is around!
