when i first watched this youtube that ice cream james sent me, i was moved. moved by the fact that in front of me was this little 6-yr old girl called connie talbot who sang beautifully. and despite the fact that she was a little inconsistent in her pace and her breathing, at times, came across as disruptive... she was able to capture my attention and drew me into her singing. and when i watched the video, i realized that that was exactly how her audience responded to her too. everyone was silent when she sang. and even that simon - the well-known bitchy critique - was won over.
and i wondered why.
some questions i asked - was the response and the huge popularity of connie talbot a reflection of the audience's sense of loss childhood and innocence? or that through her imperfection, she actually came across as more human and alive as compared to the mass output of modern rock / techno... etc modern genres of songs that somehow came across as mass-produced and that we are already numbed and desensitized by it? for me, it was varying degrees of yes to all the questions above.
and when i see how her parents don the `vote connie' t-shirts, i ask - what is their motivation? are they exploiting connie? are they trying to gain popularity, fame and perhaps riches through connie? or are they just giving her daughter the blessings?
whatever the case, my only hope is that - connie is happy.
