"friended"/ "unfriended" in fb

my second sis "friended" me in facebook a couple of months back after she got to know how to use it. she had been using it as part of her efforts to expand her network, something that would help boost her work output (she's a property agent). and yesterday, our fb "friendship" finally ended. here's the story...

when she "friended" me initially, it didn't quite bother me that she's part of my friend list. admittedly i was a little uncomfortable but since she asked, i gave her my link. after adding me as a friend, i noted she "like" almost every status or photos i posted. it's almost like as though she was stalking me. that made me feel somewhat awkward. on a few occasions, she expressed concern over some of my postings and said she felt they were a little too personal. and although she didn't make it explicit, i could sense her discomfort. after that, i became conscious of her invisible presence in facebook and started to practice some self-censorship in my updates. i started feeling a little restricted over time but took it in stride nonetheless. things calmed down somewhat after that.

and yesterday was interesting. i had a good chat with mum and she shared quite a bit of stories about her siblings. i took the chance to capture some of these in my status update (i use facebook as a transit location to capture my thoughts before moving them elsewhere, e.g. blog). next thing i knew, she posted a "?" comment. and then, she send me an email. i think your post is personal and i am not comfortable if my friends were to see these details. although i half-expected such a reaction, her comment made my uncomfortable nonetheless.

in response, i told her that if that is the case, perhaps i should remove my postings and not place anything that would "expose" her personal side. she caught my discomfort and replied that i should just go ahead and post what i wanted to post. "be yourself" she said. she would just refrain from commenting so that her "friends" will not be able to trace her comments. i did not reply. a few minutes later, she said she would "unfriend" me instead and that if she has anything to share, she would simply "friend" me again.

whatever the case, i explained to her that my profile is a restricted one and i had opened my updates only to people in my friend list. reflecting, this whole episode was just so weird. anyway, i left it as it was. perhaps it was for the better.

  1. Hi Jeffrey,

Now she has learned to be careful in mixing business with her personal life: the "brand" she was trying to create and manage on FB was bound to be in conflict ;-)

Personally, I refuse to "friend" relatives: everybody deserves to have their space.

    Best regards, Edwin

  2. Hey Edwin,

Yup, we all have our own ways of managing what we communicate to our circles of friends/ relatives. and if i may also add, we do have different tolerance/ benchmarks where it comes to level of comfort with regards what we share.

  3. well. i have similar experience too. i ever added them into my friend list. at the end, i suffered a lot. they will literally report to my parents what i felt, my post, my encountered....like a spy. hence, i decided to block them forever!
