nowadays, more so, after my dad passed away and my mum moved out, i feel very guilty leaving sapphie alone at home over a prolonged period of time. so nowadays, i would rush home immediately after work to spent time with her. try not to go out for too long a duration as i am sure she would be lonely.
i mean, yes, granted that she's a dog, but she's my family and over the years, i've come to see her and treat her in a manner no different from any human being. a non-dog owner may laugh at me, but, having lived with a dog for the last 8 over years, i have come to be able to understand the facial expressions of my dog (i sometimes refer to her as my daughter). i was able to know when she was smiling, when she was happy, when she was sad, when she was feeling guilty and so on.
really, it is not different from any human beings.
thinking back, when i was still with james, i would do the same. and many a times, i would chide james for neglecting her and for not bringing her down early enough to pee/ shit. i was worried that prolonged holding of her bladder would result in problems later in life. this need to rush home was negated after my mum moved in to my mum in jun 2005. and she took over the responsibility of walking sapphie eventually. i must admit that i have taken her (my mum) for granted and have since established the habit of staying out late.
until recently.
i must readjust my schedule. she is sapphie and she is family.

Yes, pets are just like family to us. One should never neglect or take them for granted. Am glad that you realised that now instead of later. :)
