my department head had resigned and has started clearing his leave. and suddenly, the department went onto an auto-mode. everyone was just doing their daily activities like as though nothing has changed. i am not sure about my colleagues, especially the younger ones, but i certainly felt rather uneasy.
uneasy for the fact that this period is budgeting time and my fellow managers in the department seemed to be rather nonchalant about it. although it is none of my business, i thought it was important to pre-empt them so that they can do their ground work and prepare for it. one or two had started to feel the urgency but for some others, especially the junior managers, they simply brushed it off as a non-event. i fear difficulties downstream if budgeting is not done well. then again, if i want to be selfish about it, i would simply do what i need to do for my areas. but it is not nice if things go wrong next year.
let's see how things go, the new head will not come until january and there is a good month plus to go without a leader. all my previous companies, except this current one, have taken budgeting very seriously as we all understood the implications if it is not done well. for now, i will just quietly coach those that are more open to me.
Hi Jeffrey,
ReplyDeleteIt's times like these that show who is self-directed rather than other-directed. It always surprised me how many managers heavily relied on their seniors rather than being more autonomous.
Hope they are not hobbled by lack of funds in the new fiscal year. Lack of forethought is not a good introduction to a new boss; especially when it comes to budget to get the job done.
Best wishes, Edwin
Hey Edwin, it is hard to influence people whose starting point is "don't make me do more work" and "don't see the need to change".
ReplyDeleteThen again, the easy way out for me is to let things be, ask questions (that would hopefully influence some thinking and actions) and most importantly, trust the process (and management to scrutinize details in due course).
Heh... I think too much for my own food huh?
:-)
Jeffrey
Hey Jeffrey,
ReplyDeleteI always thought those extra thoughts are called leadership :-)
If it is thinking too much it must be time for a promotion ;-)
You are right: all you can really do is ask some questions for those less experienced to have an idea. Unfortunately, managers who are comfortable aren't interested in moving into gear until a superior calls for action.
Best regards, Edwin
haha Edwin... Promotion? Not expecting any more for as long as i stay with this company. Added to that, i do not think my current big boss knew what i do or have done and so, any promotion, or for that matter, any reward is unlikely as far as i can think of.
ReplyDelete:-)
