it's the start of the jubilee weekend 

the country is going into overdrive celebrating sg50

and this is to be expected

the country had indeed come a long way

third world to first world within half my lifetime

there is much to be proud of

i cannot help but reflect

the contrast i see in many other countries

where people struggle with life's basic necessities

and clashing over race, language and religion

and where there is a high level of distrust

between people and leaders

singapore is not perfect

i have my personal tensions with the institution

i have not observed national days since 2005

but i still acknowledge and celebrate 

the fact that i am a son of the country

i am singaporean
