Over the past 4 months, I had coachees who broke down and cried during my coaching session. And all of them (4 in total) were ladies. But last week alone, 2 male coachees broke down on consecutive days. It came as a surprise and admittedly, I wasn’t too mentally prepared for it.
What I realized is that during such moments, it is important to acknowledge the emotions, regardless of gender, and to provide them the space to come to terms with the underlying reasons behind the emotions. It is also equally important, if need be, to call out the safe space they are in at the moment and have tissue paper readily so that they can reach out for it if they need.
