when it comes to people, the only thing that is constant in this whole world is - self-interest.
i had this little debate with my friends earlier and i made this point just to tickle their thinking process. so far, none of them can proof me otherwise. my argument is that in everything that a person does, the motivation can always be traced to his/ her own self-interest. do you agree? another area that i tried to tease their thinking include - "you cannot survive on hope. there is a fine line between hope and delusion"... agree?

In most cases it is out of self interest. The argument that their are ppl who have altruistic intention and thus do not necessary act out of self interest.
ReplyDeleteHowever sceptics will counter argue that such altruistic goals are just a veil for the definition of a larger self (for MY family, MY country, MY race, etc).
We cannot deny that there are indeed a very small portion of ppl who act out of kindness and compassion without regards on distinction (sometimes even if it means sacrificing the interest of their larger self).
The Buddha do recognise the exsistance of such state and in fact non-self is the crux of His Teachings. We have a term for it Anatta. The reason why we are still not free from suffering is because of our grasping of the "Self" ideal.
